Something strange has happened with Wine.
I originally installed Wine on Ubuntu 12.04, and have since upgraded first to Ubuntu 12.10 and now to Ubuntu 13.04.
On the last upgrade I noted that fine details such as strokes on letters on fonts were missing, and small icons in the menu bar of some programs had become unreadable. There are no other problems when running programs on Wine.
Obviously some aspect of the video display has been degraded and maybe this is related to the selection of video rendering or the video driver setting by Wine. But to be quite honest, I have not got a clue.
I have tried help from other forums, but this has got me nowhere. Changing the video resolution in Winecfg does nothing else than change the font size. I have downloaded and installed "all fonts" through Winetricks, but nothing has made any difference.
I have no doubt that the solution would be simple if I only knew what it was.
Thanks in advance.
Display degraded in Wine since upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04
Re: Display degraded in Wine since upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04
Wine doesn't choose a video driver; it uses whatever you have installed on your system. When you upgraded, did you reinstall your graphics driver? Failing to do that often causes problems in Wine. If that doesn't fix it, try reinstalling all your apps in Wine. Wineprefixes usually survive system upgrades, but sometimes they don't.

And does 'winetricks corefonts' help, by any strange chance?
Re: Display degraded in Wine since upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04
Hello Moderator, I have checked the graphics driver in Ubuntu and it comes up as installed. It's easy to see anyhow as I have an odd size 5:4 screen. I have had a good look and it appears that most graphics are OK in Wine, it is just these small icons and smaller letters and numbers that render poorly.
Have not tried Winetricks corefonts, will try and get back. Thanks, Paul.

Re: Display degraded in Wine since upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04
No, all the fonts including the corefonts are already installed. Calling the installation for these up again or using the Winetricks console does nothing. In fact the only fonts I have not installed are a couple of oriental script fonts. I think the problem is that everything is set at too fine a resolution for my 1280 x 1024 monitor (the only possible resolution for this 5 x 4 monitor with the Ubuntu driver). If my monitor had four times the pixel density it might be OK. But all the graphic display in Wine seem to be set much finer than was the case with Ubuntu 12.10. I can however see no problems with any of the Linux aps. Changing the Wine desktop size only makes the desktop smaller or larger it does not render graphics differently.
Re: Display degraded in Wine since upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04
This turned out to be a problem associated with Wine on Ubuntu 13.04, as this problem no longer exists since I have installed Ubuntu 14.01.
So this is problem solved.
Paul.
