Installing latest wine(1.5.30) causes freak network

Post by zilent »

Im currently using wine1.5.30, but ive been using the latest since 1.5.28.. my computer box is a Dell Inspiron 520, dual core, E6700 series processor x64 bit.. im also using an alfa AWUS036H wireless adapter.... i believe this information to be the most pertinent as using several distros, Kubuntu12.04 and 12.10 and 13.04, Ubuntu 12.04, and Mint 14 Miya, i have the same, weirdest problem... None that i have found anywhere on the internet... its an interesting situation... shortly after installing wine, my current network connection, after an undecerned amount of time, (hard to track its extremely volitile) my current connection disappears out of my network list... heres the kick.. it also wipes out any wireless connections (i.e. the lap top next to me, which also, loses its connection) to the target AP within range of my adapter O_O .. i have to shut off my wireless connection (only on the Dell), resume it, and both my machine, and my laptop will reconnect to the modem at the same time. I`m completely lost.... i hope someone can help... Further questions that would help are MORE than welcomed...

Do you really mean installing, or did you mean to say running? Because if the problem merely started some time after you installed Wine, but occurs whether it's running or not, then it has nothing to do with Wine and the timing is just a coincidence.

It only occurs after I install wine1.5.28-30 (as I started using the latest repository on 1.5.28), running or not, albeit it occures more frequently when it is running. If I purge said package, the problem halts. It`s only occured once today, and If I might add the stable 1.4 does not cause this to happen(as i run it on a daily basis). I want to use 1.5 but dont dare. I hope that helps... Oh, a quick example, and this is not limited to just this example, when running the launcher to download and, also while playing Diablo III, I had to use the 1.5.28 version as 1.4 would not run the installer.. this would cause many many disconnects, sometimes within seconds of eachother, and i would even warn my friend that i was gonna be using wine1.5 and to expect his laptop to D/C... to play Diablo III disconnect free, I had to sudo apt-get remove wine1.5 and thus sudo apt-get install wine (after deselecting the sources.list line of wine1.5 of course).. :/ i have no idea where to even look to find where the problem starts... I on the right track?

Wine cannot be the cause of any problem that occurs when it is not running. From your description of the symptoms, I'd say you either have a buggy wireless driver or failing hardware.

ok, so i`ve been running my machine 48 hours, without running wine, with no problems... I opened Diablo III with wine, my wireless failed 5 minutes later... So you seem to be right, it is only when i run wine... sorry for my ignorance.. :\

Wine is a user-level process, and shouldn't be able to knock out wireless entirely on your machine. However, Wine can expose bugs elsewhere (e.g., drivers, kernel) and that may be what's happening.

If you post terminal output from Wine when wireless fails I'll take a look at it and see if there's any indication what's going on. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log
