Wine and Win games

Post by Dallas2coolio »

Is this true about someone saying that Wine will never play games and perform the same was as playing the same games on Windows systems? Basicly if you had two the same systems and one had Ubuntu with latest Wine and one had Win 7 will Win 7 allways perform better on Windows games no matter how updated Wine is?

Also with the new Ubuntu 13.04 will that still not perform as good as Windows even if you have the latest drivers and Wine version on Ubuntu?

Depends on the game, and depends on your hardware. I've seen reports of some older games working better in Wine than in Windows, and even some that won't run at all in Windows 7 but work fine in Wine. But the operative word here is "older," and that's probably not what you're asking about.

For newer, 3D games, expect a framerate of 50-80% of what it is on Windows. Performance will generally be best with a newish Nvidia card using their proprietary driver. Open source drivers are generally not adequate for 3D games in Wine, and it's not just framerate: they have issues like missing textures, crashing, etc. I have one game that works fine on my desktop computer with an Nvidia card but crashes on start on my laptop with Intel graphics, though it does work on the latter in Windows.
