I have installed wine1.5 (before I hade version 1.4) on my ubuntu 12.10 and running win programs in Windows 7. In order to read some old (win98) hlp files I have tried to use winhlp32.exe from Browse C: (also installed from ubuntu sw center). It doesn't work, I just get an error message ' ... encountered error ... has to be stopped ..'. Still the same? winhlp32.exe (loaded from MS) can open the file when running in Win OS.
Next I tried to find the wine command winhelp. Couldn't find it - has it been removed or should I have some additional packages installed?
winhelp and winhlp32.exe dont't exist/work
Re: winhelp and winhlp32.exe dont't exist/work
Both winhelp.exe and winhlp32.exe exist on my system in 1.5.27 and are able to open .hlp files for SimCity 4, which is from the Windows 98 era. This is with no changes to winecfg.
Try changing the Windows version back to the default (XP) in winecfg.

Re: winhelp and winhlp32.exe dont't exist/work
Thanks,
I also have the wine version 1.5.27. Tried win 98, win xp and win 7 (which is my windows OS) in wineconf: winhlp32 doesn't work and after error message the desktop background gets black with no icons. Get it back again by starting Nautilus.
In which folder could I find the wine winhelp command? This is my terminal response:
simo@simo-N150-N210-N220:~$ wine winhelp
wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\winhelp.exe"

Re: winhelp and winhlp32.exe dont't exist/work
You're not trying to run the winhlp32 from your Windows install, are you? Don't.Tried win 98, win xp and win 7 (which is my windows OS)
Sounds like a buggy graphics driver.after error message the desktop background gets black with no icons
Both winhlp32.exe and winhelp.exe should be in the wineprefix's /windows directory. In which folder could I find the wine winhelp command?
Try a clean wineprefix.
Re: winhelp and winhlp32.exe dont't exist/work
Ok, first I repaired the "macro 1037" error in Windows 7 so I got the hlp file working correctly in there. Then in ubuntu I cleaned the wineprefix following the instruction "mv ~/.wine ~/.wine-old". After that I did the wine installation of the application (simnon 3.0) using setup.exe (with all the necessary files, which I had copied to my ubuntu Downloads-folder. The same I used to make the installation in my win 7 os.). The installation generated new .wine with two folders (dosdevices and drive_c), as well as three files (system.reg, user.reg, userdef.reg and .update-timestamp). The application exe-file as well as the hlp-file were now in folder /.wine/drive_c/Simonon30. Both winhelp.exe and winhlp32.exe were in folder /.wine/drive_c/windows. (I just wonder if the winhlp32 appl is correct - should be with capital letters WinHlp32). Anyhow, when opening the hlp-file with WinHlp32 I got the error message as in the attached filedimesio wrote:You're not trying to run the winhlp32 from your Windows install, are you? There was no file attached to your post.
Re: winhelp and winhlp32.exe dont't exist/work
For some reason the "add the file" didn't work. Please, find a copy of it below.dimesio wrote:There was no file attached to your post.
I got the hlp-file open throuhg terminal with "wine winhlp32.exe /home/simo/.wine/drive_c/Simnon30/Simnon30.hlp" although not with all the functionalities and saying that "could not find the hdk3ctnt-file. I noticed that the windows driver hdk3ctnt.dll was only in the application's windows program folder (C:/Progrm Folders/Simnon30), so I made a copy of it into C:/windows/system32 folder and made another clean wineprefix. In windows the winhelp.exe started working partly, not fully. Winhlp32.exe had all the functionalities after I did the regedit of the winhelp registry. From unbuntu terminal the winhelp.exe didn't work - could not find the hdk3ctcn-driver.
I think that this windows integration problem can not be solved. The other issue may be that I installed java jdk 1.7.0_17 as well as Gnome Shell 3.8.0.1, which is causing problems with libgjs0-libmozjs185-1.0 - provided by libgjs0c 1.34.0, but not by the libgjs0c 1.36.0+js17 which I most likely have. Re: winhelp and winhlp32.exe dont't exist/work
If something doesn't work in Windows, don't expect it to work in Wine either. If changes to the registry fixed a problem in Windows, try making the same changes to the wineprefix's registry.Simo wrote: In windows the winhelp.exe started working partly, not fully. Is this a hardware driver? If so, it won't work in Wine. From unbuntu terminal the winhelp.exe didn't work - could not find the hdk3ctcn-driver.
