Outlook 2003 Crashes

Post by shadeclan »

I've tried to get Outlook to run without success. I've tried installing it through Winetricks and through PlayOnLinux. I've tried taking the defaults and I've tried getting creative. In my current attempt, I've created a 32 bit virtual drive in PlayOnLinux from which I'm installing and attempting to run Outlook. I've tried several different versions of Wine but all have similar issues. Basically, Outlook is crapping out during the Startup Wizard. In some versions of Wine, some windows are blank - in 1.5.24, it skips the POP3 configuration windows completely. Here is the debug log entry from my most recent attempt to run Outlook:

Code: Select all

Really not sure how to proceed from here. I'm hoping it's a simple matter of installing from the PlayOnLinux component list but, as you can see from the log, there's no direct clue as to which package that might be. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

The AppDB rates Outlook 2003 as garbage, but the test results are old. It is possible it could work in current Wine, but installing Office 2007 would be a better bet if that is an option, as people have reported it working.

As for POL, their script for installing Office 2003 fails to set overrides that are needed. It is not supported here.

Reinstall to a clean wineprefix following the instructions in the AppDB entry for the Microsoft Office installer. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=3214

My fault - I assumed that, since Office 2003 was listed in WineTricks as an standard installable app, that it would run without difficulty.
I looked at the instructions - their big thing is to set up a 32 bit wine prefix. I did that through PlayOnLinux, I thought.
Here's something: the PlayOnLinux.cfg file in the prefix I set up has the following values:

Code: Select all

ARCH=x86
VERSION=1.5.24
Perhaps the "ARCH" parameter is the same as WINEARCH? Maybe changing it to WIN32 would make a difference? Or will that screw the prefix up and WIN32 only works in a straight WINE directory?

I would love to use something that didn't tie me to Microsquish. Unfortunately, Outlook is unique in its printing abilities. I am a dinosaur and don't have a cellphone or tablet so I carry my contacts / calendar in a paper planner. Outlook is the only personal information manager that will print the pages the way I like them - I won't bore you with the configuration details.

I will try Thunderbird and, in my research, I found a printing add-on for it but I have to tell you right up-front that I think it's going to be a complete waste of my time. I have actually paid good money for 3rd party apps that claim to print like Outlook and have been disappointed every time. Well, I'll check it out and let you know. Nobody would be happier than me to find something other than Outlook that actually gave me what I needed.

The architecture of the wineprefix is not the issue. The POL script for Office 2003 fails to set the overrides for riched20 and gdiplus as specified in the AppDB howto.

Questions on how to use POL need to be asked on their forum. It is not supported here.

Fair enough but you must expect newbies like myself to stumble in with "inappropriate" questions from time to time. Thanks for the help - I'll ask around at PlayOnLinux and see what there is to see.
