I recently installed BattleField 1942 from the original CDs and applied the latest patches to 1.61b
The resolution options in the game are pretty screwy and there are a bunch of them at refresh rates other than 60, even withing 100's.
My monitor is 1680x1050 so I selected a 1400x1050 at 59Hz but my monitor then says it doesn't support that range and I have to restart X.
The only ones at 60Hz are 1600x1200 (too big for my monitor) and 800x600 (looks terrible).
I have followed this guide to no avail:

I'm wondering if there is something on the Wine side that tells applications which video modes are available.
Is it configurable... or is it just passed directly from Linux to the Wine application?
Thanks,
~Eric

Re: monitor modes in games
Have you tried Wine's emulated virtual desktop? (It's on the Graphics tab in winecfg.)

Thanks... that seems to have worked.dimesio wrote:Have you tried Wine's emulated virtual desktop? (It's on the Graphics tab in winecfg.)
I can now play the game at 1680x1050.
Next step... figuring out how to get PunkBuster working so I can actually play multiplayer.
I think it has something to do with the fact that I had to patch the game with a patch from gamecopyworld to bypass the SecuRom since it seems it won't work under Wine because of something in gcc.
