Installing 688 Hunter/Killer

Post by Kols »

Hi!

I'm running Lubuntu 12.04 on my old laptop. Although it's old, I'd like to install a few games on it. JANE's "688 Hunter/Killer" is an old game, which I figure will run smoothly on this machine.

BUT.

I'm THIS close to dismissing Wine altogether, and regarding all posts about Wine using new applications such as WoW and Steam and whatnot to be fake.

I REALLY don't know how to do anything with this program.

Now, I've read the rules, and what info to post before posting a problem (wine-version, winecfg etc.). The only thing I can give you all regarding info, is
WINE-VERSION: 1.4.
OS: Lubuntu 12.04 emulating Windows 95

Now, to the problem;

I have an original copy of this game on a cdrom. I'm sure the cdrom mounts. What my procedure has been so far is:

1. $winecfg - where I alter the Default Configuration under Applications to "Windows 95"
2. $wine /media/[Name that cdrom is mounted with]/Setup.EXE
3. This brings up the setup-dialoge. I choose installation-folder (which is C:/JANES/etc by default, and also the one I choose)
4. Setup continues for a split nanosecond, with the output "COPYING FILES" which leads to "COPYING FILES error!" (i tried installing the game on my desktop-computer, running windows 7 - it took about 10 seconds to install the whole thing; in other words, NOTHING really happens under wine setup. Also, it runs on my desktop)
5. Nothing to do, other than to exit setup

Now, this DOES produce some files, including the launcher for the game in the folder /.wine/JANES/etc. I tried giving the whole folder u+rwx-permissions, but still no joy when

$wine [launcherfile].exe.

It appears to be loading for a few moments, then outputting "Some graphics failed to load. Please insert CDROM" - in other words - it doesn't work.

Lastly, this game is listed as GOLD under the wineapps that works.

TL;DR : HOW THE FRAK DO I INSTALL 688 Hunter/Killer??

ty in advance.

The AppDB gold rating is for 1.5.17, so start by upgrading Wine.

Second, why did you change the Windows version to Windows 95? Nothing in the AppDB suggests that this is needed.

Try reinstalling to a clean wineprefix (no winetricks, no changes to winecfg) using the current development release. If it still doesn't work, post terminal output.
