Wine and Terminal

Post by Korben »

I've noticed that sometimes games only work when you run them through terminal why is this? Specifically I've been trying to get Portal 2 to work when launching it through steam I get to the splash screen and it closes, however when launch it through wine command in terminal the game loads fine. Any idea as to why this is?

I just might know why...

I might be remembering this wrong, but I think Portal is typically launched by a Steam launcher program (a program other than Portal itself). If there's an issue with that launching program in Wine and the shortcut you're using to start Portal tries to start Portal through that launcher, whereas starting Portal through commandline bypasses the launcher, then that explains that.

Also, you might be adding some video parameters in terminal that cause it to function properly that are missing in the shortcut method.
