Daz Bryce 6.0 not opening

Post by nomadcelt »

Has anyone had any luck with Bryce 6.0?

I can fully install it as well as the extras that come with it but it will not run.

I have played around with settings in winecfg but nothing.

I am running Wine 1.0.0 under Mepis Linux 7 (Debian Etch base)

Any takers?

You really should write to Daz 3D and let them know that there is
demand for their product in Linux. Here is their contact page:
http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/support/rnlogi ... td_alp.php

You will need to present the contact info (name and email address)
that you supplied when you registered Bryce.

That's not enough information for anyone to help you. Exactly what happens when you try to run it? What settings have you tried in winecfg?

Run it from a terminal, and post the terminal output.

Many thanks. The output is:

I suspect (with little knowledge that I have) that the most of the problem comes from not being able to find the DLLs that it requires. All of those dll's and files are in the folder that it mentions.

What do I need to do? Am keen to learn.

Further to above, I found that MSVCP60.DLL was missing. I downloaded it and put it in the same directory. Ialso turned off the ALSA Audio option in winecfg and ran it again. This time Bryce got further, loading a light blue screen before hanging. I quitted the application and the terminal output is below:

wine: Call from 0x7b8425a0 to unimplemented function ntoskrnl.exe.KeInitializeMutex, aborting
wine: Unimplemented function ntoskrnl.exe.KeInitializeMutex called at address 0x7b8425a0 (thread 001

any ideas? I'd love to get this to work. It's really the only application keeping me tied to windows.

I think this
wine: Call from 0x7b8425a0 to unimplemented function ntoskrnl.exe.KeInitializeMutex, aborting
means it's trying to load something that requires direct kernel access. At least, that's what I got from googling KeInitializMutex and trying to decipher http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa490233.aspx . I don't think that's something you can fix on your own, though someone with more expertise may be able to help you. (This is definitely way beyond my level.) You should probably file a bug report.

I found a bug report for the same error message in connection with Final Fantasy 7 http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13388 . You should probably add your info to that bug report. You should also add test results to the AppDB; currently there are no entries at all for Bryce 6.

I went in to terminal and dropped in to superuser.

trying to run it now produces far more coherent errors, all of which refer to DLLs that are sat in the windows/system32 folder but which it is calling for in the DAZ/Bryce 6/ folder.

Is there a way to change the path so that it calls from the correct folders?

DO NOT!!!
If you did that you broke Wine! Never use root to run Wine. EVER!
Remember that unlike broken by design platforms (such as dos and windows) by default creates files writable by everyone. Not so on *NIX. If another user (especially root) creates a file no one else can edit it (in most default configurations).

That said. You broke your Wine configuration. Remove ~/.wine directory (yes you will have to use 'sudo rm -rf ~/.wine' to remove all files your user can't touch.

You might try disabling ntoskrnl in winecfg, or set windows mode to 9x.

I've looked in winecfg to try and disable ntoskrnl but find no way of doing that. I tried running it in Win 98 mode but now the application simply hangs with a new (empty) window with no output to terminal.

With ref the post above about running as root, I ran the command you suggested. am I right in thinking that it only removes the files created by root that the current user can't use? All of my .wine directory is still there.
