Hello all,
I've found some discussion of this problem on the AppDB already, but I haven't been able to solve it. Spotify runs fine under Wine but a large amount of the interface is covered in black bars, making it hard to find buttons. It looks thus:
This is a netbook, so the graphics chipset is likely some sort of generic Intel thing. OS is Linux Mint, wine is version 1.3.21 .
Any suggestions would be appreciated... I think Spotify just cut Unlimited subscribers out of the Linux port, so it's back to emulation again, unfortunately.

Two possibilities come to mind:
One is that your Wine version is not only old, it falls in the period when parts of the DIB engine were starting to be incorporated, and there were some regressions during that time. You should upgrade to the latest development release.
The second is that there was a known bug in the Intel graphics driver that caused heavy black lines in the UI for a lot of apps. It was around for over a year and just fixed a couple of months ago; if you're not using the 2.16.0 Intel driver, try upgrading.
All right, I've upgraded to the newest version, but the problem persists.
This may be a stupid question, and not entirely the right place for it, but how do you update the graphics driver? I've never had to do it and so far I've found no useful information about how to do it. I'm not even sure which chipset I have.

Ask on your distro's support forum. It's not a Wine question.
For future reference, here are a couple notes about this problem and how I solved it:
- After reinstalling my OS to the latest version (the update manager was broken), Spotify looked fine, even on an older version of Wine. So the problem was indeed likely caused by the graphics driver.
- Today I accidentally set Wine to run Spotify in Windows 98 mode and the problem recurred in both the latest and older versions of Wine. Setting Spotify to Windows 7 compatibility corrected the problem.
