Steam and computer run very slowly

Post by writes_on »

HI all,

I have Wine 1.3.26 installed on my Linux Mint 11 system, and have installed Steam. Steam runs, but it runs incredibly slowly, and causes the rest of the computer to also run very slowly. The odd thing is that the games I have (Portal and Half-Life 2) seem to run fine once they get going. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions or pointers about what's going on and if there is anything I can do about it?

Thanks in advance,
Doug

Yes, some steam pages do run slow. They doing things that are not well optimized on wine.

Start steam in minimized mode "wine steam -silent". Or start game with "wine steam -applaunch <game-id>".

I personally don't experience this except for flash inside steam (the sound
is flawless but the video is just a bit off). Everything else seems to work
flawlessly/barely uses any CPU and isn't slow to me. Specs: nvidia 260m
gtx, 285 beta nvidia drivers, core duo intel 2.2ghz, Ubuntu 11.04, Gnome
2.0, no compiz enabled (if compiz is enabled you could try disabling it).

I said "some pages". It's not always the same, and it constantly changes, with changes in Wine and/or Steam.

Same happens on Windows, to lesser extent of course. Otherwise Valve wouldn't be making changes like this:
Fixed high CPU usage on some machines caused by WebKit windows running their frame loop at a fast rate even when not visible

Ahh I misunderstood my bad. I guess I was reading yours but thinking of OP
about slows whole computer down.
