How To Get Games on Steam?

Post by Entanglement »

I'm about to try out Team Fortress 2 because my friends wanted me to join in with them, and I'm using Wine to run Steam.

However, because I'm new to this Steam business and everything, I'm just curious -- how do I install a game using Steam as the AppDB says?

Or, how do I move TF2 files to this "steamapps" folder, and if that is the preferred method, how can I get the TF2 files?

You can do this :
1- Buy a game from steam store (unless it's free/demo)
2- On the game webpage url, you see a number, for example : http://store.steampowered.com/app/91200
3- Launch Steam like this : wine "Steam.exe" -applaunch 91200

If the game is not already in steamapps folder, it will download it, if it's already downloaded, it will launch it :D

Good news and bad news:

Good News:
I got Steam to download Team Fortress 2.

Sad News:
It crashes when I try to load it after I type in this:
WINEDEBUG=-all wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steam.exe -applaunch 440

(the wine "Steam.exe" -applaunch 440 didn't work)

What Linux/UNIX distribution are you running?
What is the version of wine that you are using (wine --version)?

I'm running 1.3.25 using Slackware 13.37 64-bit (I have the 32-bit multilib packages) and I'm updating to kernel 3.0 right now (2.6.39.3 before this upgrade).

You did not need to bump this. Have you been to the Steam and TF2
Application Database pages in the Applications Database?

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=9901

There is a VERY IMPORTANT note about a page and a half down about
disabling the introduction, which may help in this case.

Read through all of the most recent notes as well.

I did, and it's not the intro I'm talking about. Had it been, I wouldn't be here asking about it since it's not the intro, but the game downloading updates when it opens the box and says:

"Preparing to Launch Team Fortress 2..."

Is when it crashes.

Is there no entry in the Applications Database for this?
Is there a bug report for this problem (there was a long list of bugs in the entry but I was looking for your problem at the time)?
If either of these two is false, then can you create a logging file from the instructions on the Wine FAQ (http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log) and post it to a site like pastebin.com that is publicly accessible and put the URL (including the number/letter junk at the end) in this forum post?
Thank you.

I humbly apologize for my errors.

Everybody kept saying "Steam In Game, turn off something relay" and I thought I had to actually do that IN GAME. ^.^

If Steam keeps crashing in News/Store (as for me) install corefonts/tahoma with winetricks.

I use this version:
http://winetricks.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/src/ (checkout the whole directory for all support files).

Actually, I'm trying this out right now, and here's a problem I'm getting:

It's asking me to remove the Samyak/Oriya font, which I don't quite know of.

I'm using Slackware 13.37 64-bit if it helps and if any other Slackware user knows the directory to which I can remove it.
