Buildung Wine on OS X
Hi folks out there,
I'm new to this project but very keen on more information. The reason I want to have Wine, is because I want to get "Klingon Academy" on OS X. On every Windows Revision above Win 98 the game fails, so I thought: "Why not do it the other way around and try Wine?"
So, here I am. And after the first look into the Wiki page, I was VERY confused on how I should do it. I've build a few programs up until now, but this help just confuses me.
I've grabbed the source code and installed xquartz new, those point were clear. But the rest...
When I want to build wine from scratch, I need Fink. Okay, after a while, I have installed Fink and I sit there and ask myself:
- Which libs do I exactly need
- How do I get them to be acknowledged when building wine
- What other things do I have to look for, before/after building
Is there a tutorial or can somebody help me a little out?
Specs:
OS X 10.6.8
I have a 32 bit CPU, 2 GB of RAM and an ATI X1600.
Thanks in advance,
Sheva

If you do not feel comfortable using UNIX shell scripts, then try either
MacPorts or Fink. Both have Wine as an installable product and
build/create/retrieve all of the required dependencies for you.

You might be better off Googling for the osxwinebuilder script and usingHi folks out there,

Be aware that, in general, ATI cards tend not to work as well withI have a 32 bit CPU, 2 GB of RAM and an ATI X1600.

While in general there is less of a problem with ATI GPUs in OSX than with Linux, there are still more issues with them. In fact my Intel HD 3000 has less issues than my ATI.. as it takes just about everything thrown at it which is a big change for Intel.
That said... the Radeon X1600 drivers in Mac OS X are horrid, and have many issues even running native OpenGL apps that work on all other ATi cards fine... so expect problems.

A already have issues, for example full screen resolution or loading textures. Also I have a few problems on running the game start. It wants to have "CD 2", but it is already launched and in listed in the preferences as mounted drive...
Its not so easy to get it up. Yesterday it recognized the "CD 2" as mounted drive and run, but today it doesnt.
I really like that game and tried to let it run under a VM, but I got CTDs after a few minuted, so I was willing to try WINE. Not easy...
I also think, that this game is kind of a 16-bit thing (I remember to have read something somewhere about that) but I dont know, what consequences will result out of this.
It would be pretty neat, if Klingon Academy would run "platinum" on Wine.
Would it run better under Linux (for example Ubuntu)? I have plans to build a new machine later and get away from the bitterness of Steves evangelistic religion which somewhat gives me the creeps. It would be the upcoming bulldozer CPU with the upcoming Radeon 7k series... Is AMD supporting good drivers for Linux/Wine/etc ?

Well I haven't ever played Klingon Academy, but I know there are unofficial ports floating around for it... including a Wineskin one over at portingteam.com.Sheva wrote:A already have issues, for example full screen resolution or loading textures. If you want to use Wine for gaming on Linux, you are MUCH better off using an nvidia GPU... ATI/AMD GPUs will be more problematic.

Some of the problems encountered by AMD/ATI GPU users are not present

Unfortunately, Mac buyers don't have much of a choice when they buy a
'pre-built' system like a MacBook or an iMac.

Okay, I've tested it with Wineskin and it runs... but again the mounted image is not recognized. (But showed up) :-/
I've named the disc KA_2 (for klingon academy cd 2). May it be the case, that the game wants to have a specific name for the CD and wont recognize other names than the "original"?
I have the original CDs here, but it doesnt makes any sense to put it into my drive when I have .iso images of them (plus, they only contain movies and I thought about creating a folder so that the game goes directly into the folder instead of searching the drives for them)
I think thats the border-line for me here, cause I'm not very into debugging and modding of game-files.
(I try to change the 'movie-path' now... maybe this will do the trick)

Getting the ISO to mount right where it recognizes it usually does need the right name, and the same it was installed from. It also doesn't always work. Getting these to automount in Wineskin is possible, but it will take a lot of trial and error... me, when I run into these I just try to use a no-cd hack... which I see some available for Klingon Academy, which would allow it to work and not look for discs at all. Of course as a disclaimer, those cracks are not legal in every part of the world.Sheva wrote:Okay, I've tested it with Wineskin and it runs... but again the mounted image is not recognized. I got it around with editing the movie-path. I copied the movies into an additional folder, edited the path and it just worked.
So no need of cracks.
The only two things left, which are a little broken:
- hardware-accelerated mouse-recognition (the mouse is really slow and unresponitive)
- loading off all textures. I may live without them to play the game. But empty space that is firing photons looks a little funny
At least, it works.
Thanks a lot.
