Have you looked in the Applications Database for this program and searched through the forums for solutions?

I'm downloading the demo now to check what problems I see with wine-1.3.24.

GLSL is the default, so no.

I did just try the US demo in wine-1.3.23. I had to do 'winetricks d3dx9_36' to get past
the black screen. Here's a screenshot:
http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=35546
Looks pretty similar to totry's, but I haven't looked at it in detail yet.

I didn't see any health indicators under enemies. I'll have to try the game in
windows to see how it is supposed to look.

totry, what graphics card, drivers, and version of wine?

It's a bug that has been around for years. If you want to check your health/endurance/toxicity you can mouse over the respective bar and the numbers will pop up.

I'm not trying to be funny, but that version is about four months old.
Have you tried updating to the current development release to see if the
problem is resolved or that you have better game play?

There is a lot of work ongoing with the graphics system and hopefully
when it is complete, games and other programs will run much better and
faster.

But I saw the same problem he did. So while it's generally good
advice to use the latest wine, it probably won't fix his problem.

First look at the Downloads page. If there is no Wine build for Mint,
then you might have better responses if you ask on the Mint support
forums.

Basically, this is the only thing to do here. There is no known solution for the health bar bug in any version of Wine on any OS. The game is still 100% playable with no health bars, at least in my experience.

Word of warning, though: I encountered a more serious bug with saved games that doesn't kick-in until about midway through the game. Several other Wine users have reported similar problems (http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?p=63778, and in the AppDB), and as yet I don't think anyone has a solution (although I'm working on it to the best of my limited abilities). In the meantime, if you encounter this bug it is almost impossible to finish the game, so caveat emptor, etc.

It's unlikely to be fixed unless someone files a bug for it, which AFAICT, no one has.

Read up on the history of Wine. It started long before FPS games on the
PC. Actually, the first goal was to get a specific program running
under Linux that ran with Windows 3.1.

If you don't file bug reports, how are the developers to know that the
game in question is broken? Dimensio stated that NO ONE has filed a bug
against the health problem. Will YOU be the one to do this?

I was talking about the problem with saved games. It's been mentioned here and in the AppDB several times, but no one seems to have filed a bug for it.

There is a bug report for the health bar, http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12771.

The health bar bug is here (included with several other Witcher graphical bugs):
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12771

Maybe the health bar bug should be split off, as most of the current discussion is about ATI specific problems, and problems with the built in d3dx9_36 dll.

One bug, one bug report folks. Yes, this should be split off if it
affects all video cards.
