Pegasus Mail - runs slow - tuning wine?

Post by Ace... »

PMail 4.6 does function okay, but slowly.
it's most apparent when looking at a "lazy html" auto sent message.
the icon buttons all seem to re-set themselves in sequence, not dissimilar to my old pc with the winxp desktop items gradually appearing, due to lack of mem.

The pc is 64bit AMD C-50 3Gb ddr3
PM flies along in win7, but not in ubuntu 64bit 11.04, wine 1.2.3-0ubuntu1~ppa1 (wine1.2) (winxp)

I modified all the icon buttons to half size & greyscale, and this did improve speed a touch.

I tried an emulated desktop, and this again further increased speed a touch more.......... but I don't want to run PM in this config.

Perhaps there is some speed tuning I can do?
Or does the fault lie with the wine version I'm running?
Or is that just how it is, and I need to get used to it, or use another email prog?

Any thoughts anybody?

I downloaded the current version of Pegasus (4.61), and I'm not seeing any such problem here in 1.3.24.

My first suggestion would be to upgrade both Wine and Pegasus. The release notes for 4.61 mention a new HTML renderer and updated interface, so the problem you're seeing could well be a bug in Pegasus that has been fixed.

Pegasus is pretty good: it was my favourite Windows mail reader, but now
I use and prefer Evolution, a native Linux equivalent that also provides
calendar and todo list functions. Have you looked at or tried Evolution?

That's my thought on the subject: I only use Wine to run Windows apps if
there's no acceptable native Linux equivalent.

Sorry, but yes; the ver is 4.61.
on the flash screen it says 4.6.

I disabled the IE renderer cos it only works with IExplorer, and am using bearhtml, with the latest dll - as per recommendation.

I guess that the key must be to change wine to 1.3.24

It is clear that if you have found PM runs at good speed, then this must be the solution.

What is the upgrade procedure ie. must I uninstall PM then uninstall wine, then reverse?
and am i gonna have to do that every time there's an upgrade?
or can i just uninstall wine, and then install 1.3.......

re evolution
It was the self learning spam filter that i found so useful on pm, but i read from my other post that evolution has a spam filter.

maybe i should look at it.

thiing is that i have 12 years work in PM files.
Sure, as long as it works, i can load it up and copy paste email addresses, if evolution turns out to be a good package.

so far i found its handling of text, slightly bizarre, but i'm keeping an open mind.

If Pegasus can export mail in mbox format and addresses in vCard, LDAP
or possibly csv format, then you should be able to get them into
Evolution.

Or you could use a separate mail archiving system. I'd suggest mine, but
its really meant to hang off the back of a mailserver, e.g. Postfix,
which may be more complexity that you'd want. However there are
benefits: I can find all mail containing an address, a subject phrase
or body phrase or any combination thereof and sent within a given year
in around 15 seconds. There are currently 112,000 messages in my
archive.....

Whose recommendation? I didn't do anything like that; the app worked out-of-the-box. This may well be the cause of your problem. Reinstall Pegasus to a clean wineprefix and try running it with default settings.

Very little time.... missus just bak from Paris.....

@ martin ....... wow!
Sounds pretty good

@ Dimesio ....... believe me (done a lot of work on this).... ie renderer can not work cos wine doesn't have ieXPLORER.

in wine, PM MUST rely on bear html..... it is an absolute fact (cos renderer was made to work with IE.

The swap of the dll was purely to get the latest version, but this had no bearing on the underlying speed of PM under wine.

I think it must be down to the wine version, cos I've installed and re-installed umpteen times, in as many configs as you can imagine.

i think the key must be that you ran PM easily & quickly under wine 1.3
Until i've tried that.... further discussion is difficult (cos yours worked brill and mine didn't).

What i need to know is the procedure for over-installing 1.3
After that, we can talk, cos i'll be replicating your situation.

gotta go guys.

I un-installed wine 1.2 & installed the beta package.
I think that there has been a speed improvement.

the button icons still get remade, after certain actions, but this is now at an acceptable speed.

I think this has solved the problem.

Thanks for the help.
