Graphics Flickering Issue w/ Wine & ati Radeon HD 4870

I am having a graphics problem that is prohibiting me from playing portal 2 (serious business). I just recently installed Wine. I tried to play portal 2 and my graphics start flickering rapidly, mostly black.

tried on
ubuntu 10.10 64 bit
wine version 1.3
ati radeon hd 4870 ver 11.3(i believe) 04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4870]

i updated to ati radeon hd 4870 ver 11.4 and still same problem.

I've played another game called Nexuiz which works fine with my graphics card, not Wine of course.....any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Possible problem with the radeon drivers and Wine. AMD/ATI video cards
are not the first choice when working with Linux/Wine.

so is there no work around other than buying a better graphics card?

Not unless you can figure out how to get AMD/ATI or the FOSS folks to
fix the driver issue.

I'm also having this problem, I've tried adjusting the in game settings and there is no change. I have a radeon HD 5450 with updated drivers, ubuntu 10.10 and updated Wine. my processor is a AMD Atholon 2 4x, if that has any baring on things.

[edit] additionally, my issues are less of flickering in shadows and more large portions of the screen flickering black and my mouse jumping around when I'm moving.

Help?
