Re: Nikon software - Photographer
In most cases they won't work. Wine does not support any hardware drivers. And they are required to communicate to any USB device on Windows.checoimg wrote:Hi guys, I'm a photographer and I want to use the software that my camera manufacturer makes.
You should still be able to use this software for file format conversion, etc.

Could Wine be able to do drivers with some work?
I actually have View NX 2 installed and Capture NX 2 Trial doesn't install. I would put all my effort for this to happen. Maybe I just need someone to point out more details like.
I appreciate and thank you for your time.

If you mean implementing major missing pieces of Wine under "some work" then yes.checoimg wrote:Could Wine be able to do drivers with some work?

tools such as F-spot or Shotwell? They work just fine with my Pentax
DSLR. I'm running the Fedora 14 distro, which installs these programs as
standard, so the first time I plugged the Pentax in and turned it on,
its SD card was found and opened and F-spot was started automatically.
As the GIMP is a standard part of most distros, I find I don't need (and
have never tried to run) the Windows software than came with the camera.
FYI, where Windows programs for reading images from cameras and scanners
use TWAIN as the interface/driver standard, Linux uses SANE/XSANE.

Hi.
I am new to wine. I have installed wine 1.2.2 just to use View NX. I have downloaded ViewNX 2.1.2, installed using wine 'intaller_file.exe' ; it says intall is ok, but I cannot find the program. In program files, I see the folder Nikon/ViewNX 2, but inside the folder I can only find a Readme file and a Licence file.
Thanks for your help.

RE:
You could use wine for your camera, but Linux distros nowadays easily support most cameras, such as Canon, Nikon etc. I don't think you need to use Wine for this.
I use Ubuntu 10.04 myself and it supports Canon Powershot S50, I never had to use the disc that came with the camera..
thanks

I have been using a canon G4 for many years in Linux (eog, gimp, gphoto). Now I have got a Nikon SLR and I would like to work with raw files. I saw a very short demo that using View NX they modify offline some camara settings and save again as raw files. If I understand correctly, they save the pure sensor data and a few configuration parameters. The people from Nikon told me that you can find other soft. (not from Nikon) but you lose the settings from the camara: you can try to emulate it, but it is not the same (at least at the beg.). They also said that you can use wine to run View NX.
Do you recommend a substitute for that?
Thanks,
