Anyone able to install Sony Vegas HD Platinum in a linux os?

Post by shipp »

So, i tried this once before and it didn't work because wine thought it was windows xp and vegas platinum only works with windows 7. I am brand new to Wine and have no idea where to even start. I followed a documentation step by step, barely able to understand it. Using winetricks i got all the stuff supposedly needed to install, but it wouldn't even run the setup.exe file. I am not sure, I only think its because i installed a bunch of xp stuff cuz the documentation was outdated and so even if i could run it it wouldn't work. So i purged my computer of wine and am ready to start over. I own the software, so I don't need to crack anything. Anyone want to give me a basic step by step on getting it installed?

Thanks

Questions -

Post by shipp »

So, i've tinkered some more. I have a few questions.

I am able to install dotnet30. I am unable to install dotnet40. I am able to install vcrun2008, I may be able to install vcrun2010 as well. Does anyone know if Sony Vegas 10 requires dotnet40? or will dotnet30 be fine. Ive seen dotnet3.5 too, should vegas require that instead How do i install it to wine, without it being available in winetricks (i told you i was new to this).

I can't even get setup.exe to run. When i try to using gui interface my mouse pointer changes to a loading symbol and nothing happens. When i use wine or wine start from the terminal it just skips immediately to a new prompt, and nothing happens.

I fresh install wine, then i add msxl6, corefonts, tahoma, fontfix, vcrun2008, gdiplus, directmusic, quicktime 76, dotnet30 and wmp10. Is there anything else i need to run Vegas 10? Anyone know?

When i install WMP10 the winetricks process never finishes in terminal, but at the end of it Winamp opens and I can add files to the library. Whats going on there, is there something screwed up in my wine or what?

If you can answer even one of these questions, please do. Thanks

Figured out some stuff

Sony Vegas 10, Platinum HD, is very similar to vegas 9.0.

I was able to install it, I have not yet run it. But, heres how far I've gotten.
Installed fresh wine by adding the ppa and then typing sudo apt-get install wine1.3. Wine 1.3 comes with winetricks on ubuntu 10.10. wine 1.2 does not. I think either will work. To setup sony vegas do not use the setup.exe in the installation disk. It does not link to its own folders, I must be missing something.

To install exexute the following commands.

winetricks corefonts
winetricks fontfix
winetricks tahoma
winetricks msxml3
winetricks dotnet30
*dot net 30 looks like its hanging, a window tries to open repetitively, your computer will looked jacked up for a sec. when it says its stopped and paused and nothing else is happening, check your systray (your panel) there should be an icon you can open that will say "installation finished" click done or finish whatever it is, and winetricks is done

winetricks vcrun2005
winetricks gdiplus
winetricks directmusic
winetricks wmp10

*now you should be able to execute the setup files, navigate to VMCHD10ST (the install cd) then the folder Setup, then open each folder you find and run the .exe, it takes a while for them to open. When they do you can install each component seperately, one at a time. do sony vegas pro last. Then restart your computer.

open a terminal

winetricks quicktime76
winetricks ie6
*you need ie6 to register the product and finish install, you also need it to get the NewBlue special effects.

then start sony vegas, register it and download the special effects. It should work from there, not sure yet cuz I crashed deleted all my wine trying to delete the stuff i needed for the install. When i'm done I'll reinstall all this and let everyone know how it works.

Anyone able to figure this one out

Post by shipp »

Okay, so, installing vegas in wine for most of you might be obvious, but Im new to all this opensource stuff (thats what I said last year, and it still feels that way). I figured out this much, through trial and error.

The minimum wine requirements to set up sony vegas are - dotnet20, corefonts, fontfix, and msxml3.

Setup.exes wont run off the vegas movie studio 10 install cd with msxml6.

If you have those things, the installer will install the rest of the necessary components (dotnet30, vcrun2005, vcrun2008, etc.

To install the Sound Forge Audio, you need some codecs that you can get by winetricks wmp10 (through winamp) and some dirextx9 components, not sure which ones yet but i want to not install all of directmusic because its nearly a gigabyte and directx9 is known to break wine or winetricks.

Okay, so heres the problem. I installed all components, four in the setup folder, and the NewBlue Effects in the "Additional Software" folder. Open sony vegas and it asks you to register. You enter the serial number that came with software, choose register online, and its supposed to connect you to the server and register you. But, it doesn't it says for a while:

"attempting to register Vegas, now connecting to server, etc."

Then "An error occured during registration . . . an error occurred while communicating with the server. This could be due to network congestion or server failure. Please try again later."

What do i need to get this to work? I at first thought, oh I just need ie6, but that didn't work. Yes I can connect to the internet using explorer, no problems there. Does anyone know what could fix this so I can register it and see if it works?

thanks

Maybe a firewall?

Post by shipp »

So, i found out this error occurs in windows when a firewall is blocking registration, so i opened ie6 and tried to open internet options, it said that an error occured in ie6 and it was forced to shut down. This happened three times. So . . . possibly need something to run internet options that i also need to connect to sony vegas?

Is IE6 required? You might want to start with a fresh/different
WinePrefix and try using IE7 or just native functionality of Wine to see
if it works now.

Just tried Shipp's method, and I still get "Configuration xml file is possibly currupt" (sp) when I try to open the setup file. (moviestudiope10.exe downloaded from Sony website.)

Anyone got any ideas what's happening here?

Given Sony Vegas 10, Platinum HD, is very similar to vegas 9.0., it is possible. With some winetricks surely.

I also tried Shipp's advice and it is not working for me as well, and there is an error message being displayed. Any luck figuring this out? Thanks.
