Surround Sound and EAX

Post by mike el angelo »

Hi there,

I've been searching for a while now, for an answer, whether or not EAX and surround sound is supported in wine. And all I've found are contradictory opinions. So, still I can't get neither to work, and I hope, this is the right place to ask for help.

As I understood it, wine should be able to play surround sound, when alsa is able to do it. "speaker-test" showed me, that all 4 speakers can be addressed seperately, so surround sound seems to be no problem for alsa. Still it is not working in wine.

And eax... Well... Some said it is supported under linux and most said it isn't. Now, is it? And if it is. Is it also supported in wine? Do I have to do something crazy, to get this to work, or can I give up trying, now?

This is my configuration:
Soundcard: Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS (PCI), with 4.0 surround speakers
ALSA version: 1.0.16
WINE version: 1.0rc2
OS: Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)

The games I've tested:
Diablo II, Lord of Destruction
The Settlers: Heritage of Kings

Thanks,
Wolfgang

No. Both are not supported.

Is there any work being done on this or are there plans to do so?

AFAIK Wine does support multiple channels (more then stereo) but for some reason it doesn't work for programs. And no one really cares.

EAX being a closed standard won't make it into Wine.

Direct3D, Xaudio, an other Microsoft API which Wine translates aren't exactly open standards either.
