Cannot switch between excel files
I have recently installed MS Office 2007 in Wine 1.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit
I have noticed that I cannot switch between two excel workbooks. I can either work on only one excel at a time or do a lot of jugglery to switch between the two.
It will be great if anyone can give me a solution as I need to work on multiple excels most of the time.
Thanks
Prasad

Re: Cannot switch between excel files
What problem are you having? If you view them side by side, you should just be able to switch focus just by clicking on a cell in the workbook. If you have them fill the workspace, you should be able to switch with View=>Switch Windows.prasadpkamath wrote:I have recently installed MS Office 2007 in Wine 1.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit

Re: Cannot switch between excel files
Hi dimesio, please find my response below:
The only option left is to resize the workbook within the container. Then I get both excels side by side but it reduces the screen area and makes it cumbersome to scroll each time!
In my case, all workbooks open in a single excel container. If I resize the container and open a new excel, it opens in the same container, not a new one.dimesio wrote: If you view them side by side, you should just be able to switch focus just by clicking on a cell in the workbook.

I have tried opening excels in different workspaces but the problem persists. If you have them fill the workspace, you should be able to switch with View=>Switch Windows.

That's how Excel 2007 works in Windows, too.prasadpkamath wrote: In my case, all workbooks open in a single excel container. If I resize the container and open a new excel, it opens in the same container, not a new one.
Use Synchronous Scrolling (on the View tab). The only option left is to resize the workbook within the container. Then I get both excels side by side but it reduces the screen area and makes it cumbersome to scroll each time!
Have you tried View=>Switch Windows?

Re: Cannot switch between excel files
Hi dimesio, kindly note my responses below:
I do look forward to having the taskbar and Alt+Tab switching in the future
I never knew these options in excel! Yes, this does bring respite. At least I am able to switch between files now! The synch scroll is also good, but not satisfactory (never was even in Win). Anyways, at least I have got a solution to the switching problem. Thanks!dimesio wrote: That's how Excel 2007 works in Windows, too.Perhaps yes, but in Windows, when I click an excel file in the taskbar it comes to the fore. Or I can use Alt+Tab to switch between them. However, clicking on an excel file here does not show this behaviour. Alt+Tab too, does not work for excel.dimesio wrote: Use Synchronous Scrolling (on the View tab).

Re: Cannot switch between excel files
This is a quite old topics considering the last date of reply, however i'm having the same problem today, here's a little description of my problem:
I have installed Wine 1.4.1 to Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon, and installing Office (with excel within) 2007. Then i tried to open two documents (presume i need to work on both files), and i need to keep on switching between those two files (not windows). Everytime i switch files (either by using Alt+tab or clicking on the taskbar), the window freezes on the opened one, and refuses to display the one i need to open. Instead, a small box appear in the top-leftmost of the desktop, with an "x" on it, pretty much like the "x" used to close windows in Cinnamon theme. If i place my pointer near that box, it displays arrow meaning that i can resize that box, when i pull that box out, i can see that the title says it's my excel file that failed to open when i switch from the active file. The moment i release the pointer, all Excel suddenly freezes and need to forcefully closed.
I have tried installing using "Install" option in "Uninstall Wine Software" and using Winetricks as well.
Do any of you have the same problem with the same condition as i do? If so, is there any workaround for it or solution? Since I'm planning to only use Office as what's remains of Microsoft and fully migrate to Linux/Ubuntu, but almost all of my works need more than five Excel files constantly opened. I cannot use Libre Office since it somehow lacks the feeling of Office, but other than that, i'm pleased to the utmost.
Many thanks for any help.

Re: Cannot switch between excel files
Follow up from my question,
I'm able to change windows by using dimesio's suggestion by creating multiple windows within one Excel container (many thanks), but clicking on the taskbar still wont do it, neither alt+tab. Is this unsupported, if so, then i'm content.
Regards, and thanks again

Re: Cannot switch between excel files
I think switching to Excel 2010 would be the best solution to this.

Re: Cannot switch between excel files
Same problem for me in Excel 2010 from MS Office Professional Plus 2010. I've opened a bug with CrossOver, maybe they'll fix it.Varcherhillier wrote:I think switching to Excel 2010 would be the best solution to this.
