Cannot install Swtor from Wine

Post by nobleon392 »

Hello!

As of results from the previous experience as cited here viewtopic.php?f=8&t=24147 and explained by Dimesio to "reinstall your game/app to a clean wineprefix using plain Wine and retest in that before posting here" i decided to delete whole hard disk and installed a new fresh Xubuntu OS.

Before asking any questions the specifications of my computer configuration are:

MOTHERBOARD – Asrock Z97 Extreme 6 skt 1150
GRAPHIC CARDS – Gygabite Geforce GTX 970 Windforce 3x G1 gaming Soc 4Gb GDDR5
CPU – Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5 GHZ 6MB skt 1150
SSD – Crucial MX100 512GB
HDD – Seagate Barracuda 1Tb 7200RPM 64MB SATA III
MEMORY- G.Skill PC3-12800 1600 MHZ TridentX 16GB

Name of the distribution - Xubuntu 14.10
Name of the software and its version - wine 1.7.34
Your desktop - XFCE
Nvidia Drivers linux - 346.35
Kernel version linux - 3.16.0-30-generic

As i said above, i just have installed Xubuntu, Nvidia drivers and wine.

Following the wine's guide installation: "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa" ; "sudo apt-get update" ;"sudo apt-get install wine1.7" i see i have wine 1.7.34 not the "Wine 1.7.36 Released". I dont understand why. I just did my installation 3 hour ago (as the moment i write these questions).

After this procedure i went to SWTOR official site to download the "SWTOR_setup.exe", saved to computer-> "transferência files" (in english is "download files"). Rigth click and open with Wine. Created a shortcut to desktop. And a problem arised and also an opening warning box:

"Installation of the driver and support components require administrative permission acknowledgment. Try invoking the client again. Installer cannot continue. Exiting"

I tried after that with rigth button of mouse on the "Star Wars - The Old Republic" shortcut and went to "propriety->permission-> access and writing ->enabling them.

Still the warning box appeared.

I went to FAQ http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-525985f ... e1ee7bafd3 and on the section 7.12. "Should I run Wine as root?" it is said that "NEVER run Wine as root!".

So i dont know what to do. I can see that there is a path "/home/pedro/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Electronic Arts/BioWare/Star Wars - The Old Republic/" but i dont know i can i run it via terminal and because i saw that warning to never run Wine as root i got scared.

Any ideas how to launch the file in order to download fully the game to computer?
Thanks very much in advance.
Best regards.

I hope you had other reasons for reinstalling your OS, because that wasn't necessary just to get a clean wineprefix.

It sometimes takes awhile for distros to build packages.

Windows administrative rights are not the same as running as root, and when Windows apps pop up a message about that, running as root will not solve it.

What I do see from the path you posted is that you have a 64 bit wineprefix, and the AppDB howto explicitly states that the game will only work in a 32 bit wineprefix. So you need to create one, and install to that. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#32_bit_wineprefix

The most recent test report in the AppDB indicates this game also requires quite a bit of tweaking to run (and even then, still has problems). It has detailed instructions for installing and running; try following those. https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=27088.

Hello!

Thank you for your support Dimesio. Currently at my level of understanding things there is too much workaround to solve things of swtor in linux landscape.
"I hope you had other reasons for reinstalling your OS" yes i had others reasons to do that. Installing an OS without that compiz and other effects desktop and so on, could improve FPS gaming. Yes i know i can disable it but i like simple things and effective system.
I returned to windows making it dual boot with linux. So for gaming i use just windows, and day to day linux.
Thank you again for your help Dimesio.
Best regards.
