Hi,
Running current WINE 1.7.33 beta on a fully updated Kubuntu 14.04 L.T.S. 64Bit.
When running Valve's Steam client for Windows I receive error message:

Connection Error
Could not connect to the Steam network.

How can I fix the above connection error?
I currently can't use Windows Steam client in WINE...
Thanks!

Re: [Kubuntu 14.04 64Bit]-WINE 1.7.33-Steam:No Connection???
I'm getting the same message here in 1.7.34, openSUSE, on my old Steam wineprefixes. But when I installed Steam to a fresh wineprefix, it worked, and reinstalling one of my games (copied the folder from the old wineprefix) also worked.
I'm not sure what's going on. Possibly some recent change to Wine affected something in a fresh Steam install that doesn't get updated in an existing wineprefix (maybe a registry setting). I normally run Steam offline, so I'm not sure when that might have happened, though it must be fairly recent or someone would have mentioned it sooner.
So try reinstalling Steam to a clean wineprefix.

Hi,
I think I made a new wineprefix.
I reinstalled Steam for Windows.
When I try to log into Steam, nothing happens?
Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Re: [Kubuntu 14.04 64Bit]-WINE 1.7.33-Steam:No Connection???
How exactly did you make the new wineprefix?
Re: [Kubuntu 14.04 64Bit]-WINE 1.7.33-Steam:No Connection???
Hi,dimesio wrote:How exactly did you make the new wineprefix?
I think I made new wineprefix by renaming .Wine folder to .WineOLD ?
Then I installed Steam for Windows, but when logging in nothing happens?

Re: [Kubuntu 14.04 64Bit]-WINE 1.7.33-Steam:No Connection???
So you're no longer getting the "Could not connect" message?JeZ-l-Lee wrote: I think I made new wineprefix by renaming .Wine folder to .WineOLD ?

In the new wineprefix, did you set dwrite.dll to disabled? You need to. Steam also needs corefonts, installed either with winetricks or systemwide. Since it's a new wineprefix (which is a different computer, as far as Steam is concerned), you should get a popup message about authorizing that computer, and an emailed code, the first time you try to log in from that wineprefix.
If it still doesn't work, post terminal output.

Re: [Kubuntu 14.04 64Bit]-WINE 1.7.33-Steam:No Connection???
There's nothing unusual in the terminal output.
One thing I can think of: try clicking the top bar of the login window before entering your username and password to make sure that window has focus. I have noticed that it is possible to type in your username and password even though the window does not have focus, and the result is that nothing happens when you click login.

Ugggg!
Is there anything else I can do to make Windows version of Steam to run properly in WINE?
Want to play some games I have on my Kubuntu 14.04 L.T.S. 64Bit Linux...

Re: [Kubuntu 14.04 64Bit]-WINE 1.7.33-Steam:No Connection???
I don't have a solution, but I can confirm that I'm getting the same hang at login in a fresh wineprefix that I created today, using the same Wine version that I successfully used yesterday. The wineprefix I created yesterday is still able to login. The problem appears to be with the first login from a new install--the server just doesn't seem to respond. I don't know if that's a temporary problem at Valve's end, or some change that breaks Wine.
Re: [Kubuntu 14.04 64Bit]-WINE 1.7.33-Steam:No Connection???
Try setting the Windows version to Vista or Windows 7.

Re: [Kubuntu 14.04 64Bit]-WINE 1.7.33-Steam:No Connection???
It appears that Valve no longer supports XP. I tested Steam in real XP in a VM, and had the same problem, though in real Windows I also got a popup message after a few seconds telling me that Steam is having trouble connecting.
