Some questions from a Wine newbie

Post by gng75 »

Hello,

I am brand new to Wine - as in, I didn't know it existed until today - and I'm also new to gaming (on modern Macs, I suppose is the most accurate statement) - but it seems very exciting, and I'd like to know a few things.

1. I run a mid-2012 MacBook Pro with 8gb of RAM. I also use a Logitech F710 wireless gamepad - which works without hitch for all of the Lego games, by TT and Feral Interactive - I use Gamepad Companion in order for the device to be recognised, but I don't need to map any keys or anything.

2. I am a massive fan of historical combat flight-sims - Sky Gamblers on iOS started this, and I recently purchased Battlestations: Pacific to satisfy this urge. Here, I had to buy an Xbox 360 wired controller, and install the Tatiebogle driver (the Logitech was not recognised).

3. The games I play are a mix of downloaded from the Mac App Store and from Steam.

My question/s are:

Using Wine, would I be able to play something like IL-2 Sturmovik (there is a new version that looks great - but I see that this is not coming up on the Wine App database, just the first one (1946) - ?

I am not a technically-minded person, I have very little experience of Windows, I only discovered Steam last month, etc, etc. So my question is, really:

Would I be able to play the Sturmovik (or any of those great looking PC games, the combat-flight sims) - easily, without tinkering, which I have no confidence in my ability to do. This includes having either of my gamepads work with the game - the Logitech or the Xbox.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. It would be fantastic news for me if it turned out that, yes, I could go ahead and use CrossOver, download those games, plug in my gamepad and take to the virtual skies.

I also appreciate that all of this is due to many people's very hard work, so please do not think I am making light of that, and please forgive me if I'm asking for the moon, and expecting too much.

Thanks,

Greg

Well, you can't run Steam for Windows in plain Wine without tinkering, as there are a couple of bugs that have to be worked around. So if you're totally opposed to any and all tinkering and plan to use plain Wine, the answer is no.

Whether you can run any of the Windows games available from Steam without tinkering depends on what games you want to run. Check the AppDB for the specific games you are interested in; if the rating is platinum, that means it should work out of the box. If there is no entry for a particular game, that means no one has submitted a report for it yet.

Crossover, like other third party versions of Wine, is not supported here. They have their own forum and their own applications database, so you should check their support channels for any questions you have about what works/doesn't work in Crossover. Crossover does have hacks and install scripts for some of the apps/games they officially support (Steam is one of them), so there are some things that may work better/more easily in Crossover than plain Wine.

Thank you for the reply,

So sorry about the CrossOver misunderstanding.

It's not that I'm opposed to tinkering, it's that I have no confidence in my ability to do it successfully.

Also, I was thinking of trying to use Wine for non-steam games; I understand that Steam would add another layer of complexity to the task.

Thanks again for the quick reply.
