MS Word 2002

Post by jek »

I am using Wine 1.6 on Ubuntu 14.04. I would like to install MS Word 2002 in Wine. I see on your database that it does have a gold rating with previous versions of Wine, so it should work. However, it does not completely install on my computer. It does start the installer and goes through all the steps right up to the point where it should start installing the software, and then it crashes with a message that "something has gone wrong and the installer must shut down". Is there anything I can do to get it to install? I do own the install cd, and I do have the propper product key for it.

Read the warning note in the AppDB; Office 2002 is only installable if you have a slipstreamed, volume licensed copy that does not require entering a key. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=3514

Other versions of Office do install; try one of them.

So where can I obtain another similar version or a licensed copy of 2002 that does not require a key? You can't buy those anymore and I don't want the later versions, they are a lot of bull.

Legitimate slipstreamed copies are provided by employers to their employees to use under the employer's volume license. I doubt many employers are still using that old a version of Office, but you can always ask yours.

Note that pirated software is not supported here, so if you obtain a copy illegally, you are on your own.

Is there any possibility that MS Word 2002 might be able to install in future versions of Wine, or should I write it off as a bad loss? It would be a pity because there is just about nothing I cannot do with that word proccesor.

The bug is unlikely to be fixed. There is a hack patch attached to the bug report you could try if you are up to building Wine from source, but be aware that it does not apply to current Wine; you would need to patch Wine 1.0. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5163

Regarding newer versions of Office, if it's just the ribbon interface you don't like, Office 2003 does install and work in Wine, and still has the old menu system. There is also native Libre Office; it doesn't have all the features of current versions of Microsoft Office, but I'm pretty sure the word processer can do everything the 12 year old version of Word can.

The problem is that I don't have a copy of Office 2003 and it is impossible to obtain a legal copy any more. Word 2002 I do have legally.
