Hey team-
So I have been wrestling with getting Steam installed on my computer for quite some time now, and I had given up all hope. Well today I finally did the smart thing and installed POL to manage my different wine distros, and I figured I could get it up and running-and during the steam summer sale to boot!
Well, alas my core problem still exists. During the initial update that happens right after you install the msi file, Steam tells me that I need to be connected to the internet in order to update, yaddayaddayadda, then it crashes. Same error as before.
When opening up the debugger, I found the following error pop up over and over again, followed by various filesize mismatch errors:
"fixme:winhttp:get_system_proxy_autoconfig_url no support on this platform"
"[2013-06-23 12:29:15] Package file tenfoot_abientsounds_all.zip.888YADDAYADDA missing or incorrect file size"
I have searched all over the forums for how to fix this, and I just can't seem to find a solution anywhere. Any ideas?
Steam Crashes During Initial Update
Re: Steam Crashes During Initial Update
POL is not supported here. Last time I checked their script for installing Steam, it was still installing Wine 1.5.25 even though no Wine version older than 1.7.8 will work with current Steam, and this has been the case since last December.
You didn't mention what Wine version you're using, but if it's not the latest development release, upgrade, and follow the instructions in the AppDB for installing Steam. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=19444

Re: Steam Crashes During Initial Update
Yeah, I'm using the most recent dev distro (1.7.20) and I have tried with 1.7.19 and also the latest stable release (I forget what that is)
I followed all of the instructions, and it installs fine, but for whatever reason when I run it post-install, It always crashes during the updating process (After somewhere between 8,000 and 12,000 kb, and that number always resets upon multiple runs)
Is there some sort of network winetricks or wine configuration I should be using? I've heard people have been having trouble with steam and wine somewhat recently, but from what I can tell at least people are getting the damn thing to run

Re: Steam Crashes During Initial Update
The AppDB entry mentions (under Troubleshooting) a "Could not connect to network" error. The recommendation is to delete "(your-prefix)/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/ClientRegistry.blob"
If that doesn't fix it, try deleting the wineprefix and installing with winetricks.
