~ Problems installing Microsoft Office on Ubuntu 14.04

Post by Derick- »

Hello all!

First let me begin by saying i would not be able to use linux without this wonderful program and everyone out there that makes this software possible. You guys rock!

I have been able to troubleshoot and fix a number of problems trying to get office installed but this last error is the final straw. I have spent 10+ hours trying to get this installed and i am SO close i cant give up. Any help would be much appriciated.

The first few errors were mono not installed, so i installed that. Then installing dotnet20 i had two errors that hung me up. The first was 64 bit not supported and i was able to get that fixed and get the installer for dotnet20 running then it would stop saying "Winxp not supported", I ended up getting that fixed also. I ran into a ton of problems trying the 64bit and 32bit iso's of office and now im using the x86 version which i have gotten the farthest with.

So Starting the installation i get past the dotnet20 prereq install, then it actually opens the install window for office (YAY) the bar starts to move indicating that it is installing (Double yay) then BAM, out of left feild comes a huge blow. Here is the complete error details:

Re: ~ Problems installing Microsoft Office on Ubuntu 14.04

Post by dimesio »

Your Wine version is over a year old and no longer supported. Upgrade to the latest development release.

You didn't mention what version of Office you're trying to install. Office 2013 does NOT install or work in Wine, nor does the 64 bit version of Office 2010. Earlier versions do, and none of them require .NET. They all require 32 bit wineprefixes. Delete the wineprefix you've messed up, and follow the instructions in the AppDB for whatever version of Office you're trying to install. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... ion&iId=31

I am in the same boat, but even more of a newbie!!!! I cannot seem to find a blow-by-blow instruction set as to the installing of 2007........now I see above about wineprefixes......what are they? I respect the fact that trying to run software meant to run on one O/S is somehow about to be ported over to another O/S [thanks to all you great people who are involved in Linux and its variants], but for us who have been using Windows from Version 1 to now, Windows 7, it is a bit hard to just "slot into the mindset" of the command structure, the requirements to trick Windows programmes into running on Ubuntu etc., and especially trying to update said Windows programmes.

That is where I have run into the wall. I installed Wine, PlayonLInux, and Office 2007 Pro. Office runs like a lame duck with all sorts of messages being generated which are incomprehensible to me.......and now I see <wineprefixes>!!!! Although I absolutely love the way 14.04 runs on its own, I am afraid that the quasi-assimilation of Windows programmes is leaving me wanting and wondering if I should revert to Gates-ville and be done with it.

Please note that I am not being critical as I really want to use Ubuntu and be done with all the MS commercial, buggy, software.

Please do not ask me to give you details of the versions that are installed on this PC, as I do not know where to find them - and where to look.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you,

There's already a link to the AppDB entry for Microsoft Office above. Follow it, click on the link for Office 2007, and scroll down to the howto.

The AppDB howto has a link to the FAQ, but I'll repeat it here for your convenience: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#wineprefix.
I installed Wine, PlayonLInux, and Office 2007 Pro.

PlayOnLinux is not supported here. Their script for Office 2007 installs unnecessary overrides and makes other changes that will trigger known bugs. If you insist on using it, ask for help on their forum.

You can find out the Wine version by opening a terminal and typing

Code: Select all

wine --version
If, after reading all the instructions linked to, you have specific questions, feel free to ask them.

WOW!!!! Thank you very much for that. I will follow your instructions as soon as my new PC arrives and I port the HDD over to it. One last question.......I bought a Canon LiDE scanner last week and I would like to be able to use it with my 14.04, but after running "genesys" and "backend" and "Frontend" I tried using the disk that came with the scanner and it keeps telling me that either SETUP.EXE is corrupt or I should look for a solution in <AppDB>............what do I look for ? I opened it under Wine, but when it comes to installing MSETUP4.EXE, that is when I get the error ...... but, the error points to SETUP.EXE which does not exist.......so how do I interpret that message?

Sorry for the trouble, but I spent 8 hours yesterday trying to make sense of the above and searching on-line for solutions. I will still persevere with 14.04 because I am finding it more responsive than Windows.....to the extent that I have Windows on a separate HDD, and 14.04 on another one.

Thanks again......I truly appreciate your help

You can't install Windows hardware drivers in Wine. For Wine to see your scanner, it needs a working 32 bit SANE driver and Xscanimage, and even with that, there may be problems. Scanner support is poorly tested in Wine because most people with working SANE drivers just use native scanning software.

Right.....now that makes sense. Gee, the things I am learning at 75............Thanks Dimesio and everyone else for making MS sit up and wonder why and how so many people and organisations are switching over.

Keep well, stay safe, and keep smiling.

Regards.
