I am not very computer savvy. I play Sims 3 on my Macbook Pro and apparently it requires Wine or a similar program to allow this Windows program to run on my Mac. Since I got this laptop about a year ago, every time I open my computer, my fan begins running immediately. I did some research online and ended up checking my Activity Monitor. There were two or three "wineservers" running at about 70 or above CPU each, even when I was not using Sims. I took my laptop to my college's IT specialists and they helped me un-download Wine from my computer.
I still wanted to play Sims but without Wine, the program would crash every 10 minutes or so. I got frustrated and re-downloaded Wine, hoping this time wouldn't overload my computer. It worked well for a couple days, not overheating my computer and not using over about 30 CPU even when Sims was running. Sims also ran pretty well. This morning I opened my laptop and right away the fan started up like it used to. I checked Activity Monitor and "wineserver" is using around 96% CPU!
Does anyone have any recommendations? If I can't use Wine with my computer, what is an alternate program that will allow Sims to run on my Mac? Please use layman's language or I probably will not understand and will have to check a different forum just to understand your response.
Thanks!
Wineserver using high CPU- overheating Mac laptop
Re: Wineserver using high CPU- overheating Mac laptop
I don't use a Mac, so this is just a guess, but it sounds like you're not exiting the game before closing your laptop.
As for Sims 3 for Mac (assuming that's what you meant by "play Sims but without Wine"), you should report any problems with it to the vendor. Presumably it is supported by them.

Re: Wineserver using high CPU- overheating Mac laptop
The game is definitely closed before I close my laptop. To save space on my hard drive, I have the game installed on an external hard drive that I need to plug into my laptop to play the game. Even when the hard drive is detached and the CD is ejected, my fan is running and wineserver is using a large amount of CPU.
Re: Wineserver using high CPU- overheating Mac laptop
Do you have any other programs running in Wine? Wineserver and all wine processes should shut down when you exit all programs running in it. So if there's not some other app keeping wineserver open, then your game isn't exiting properly.
What version of Wine are you using, and where did you get it from?

Re: Wineserver using high CPU- overheating Mac laptop
Are you trying to use Wine, or just play the Mac Version of the game?
Sims 3 for Mac version is a Cider port... Cider is forked off Wine and runs a wineserver... this is all built into the Mac version of Sims 3 and nothing you can install separately. If you are not directly using Wine, Wineskin, WineBottler, PlayOnMac, etc... that uses Wine... then its Cider thats built into Sims 3 that may be messing up, meaning you need to get support from the makers of Sims 3. Maybe see if there are any updates for the game...
If your using some unofficial port downloaded somewhere off the net, who knows what you have... they could be stuck running for who knows what reason... even Malware.
You can select those wineservers in Activity Monitor and just Quit their processes to get rid of them... but would have to do it every time they stuck for whatever reason.
