Ubuntu (Wubi) + Wine + Steam

Post by Jaime Rave »

Try this http://wiki.winehq.org/PreloaderPageZeroProblem

2008/7/3 AJCF <[email protected]>:
Does it work?

I've been trying to set up Steam under Wine for two days now but to no
avail, I've got the Tahoma font, the Gecko engine and also tried with the
.exe and .msi and nothing :(

Using this guide (http://thepemberton.com/posts/archives/13), when I have
to type "wine SteamInstall.exe -dxlevel 90 -novid" on the terminal all I get
is this:

preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-60000000
preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-60000000
wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\steaminstall.exe": Module
not found
alexandrefonseca@alexandrefonseca-laptop:/home$ err:dosmem:setup_dos_mem
Cannot use first megabyte for DOS address space, please report
preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-60000000
err:dosmem:setup_dos_mem Cannot use first megabyte for DOS address space,
please report
preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-60000000
err:dosmem:setup_dos_mem Cannot use first megabyte for DOS address space,
please report

Is there a known fix for this? Any help would be appreciated so thanks in
advance [Wink]

Somewhere on this website it states quite clearly that the beta version of Wine that ships with Ubuntu 8.04 is quite old and that one should upgrade immediately. Can't find the page.

Somewhere else on this website is also says that the beta version of Wine that ships with Ubuntu has the Preload Page Zero Problem and the upgrading will make the problem go away. Can't find that page either.

What I can find is the page that tells you how to upgrade:

http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb

It is quite a painless process provided where there is choice between sudo commands for Debian and Ubuntu you copy/paste the right one. :)

You can't run steam from a ntfs partition because of read/write acces management
maybe someone could confirm this

Correct. Current ntfs driver & kernel does not provide everything Steam needs. Some parts you can have on ntfs, but not everything.

Forester new versions of wine do it less often with the Preloader problem. Some applications even in the lastest will still spit it up needing the same fix.

That is the information you are refering to.
