Help! Steam no longer starts after using offline mode :(

Steam ran fine in Wine until yesterday when I had to run it in offline mode.
Steam ran fine in offline mode, then when I changed back to online mode everything broke.
Steam no longer starts. It puts up the box "Steam - Connecting to steam account: xxxx..." then it disappears and hangs on "fixme:advapi:EventUnregister deadbeef: stub".

How do I fix this so it is back to normal?

Just tried purging wine1.6 and installing wine1.7
Almost thought it was going to work for a while, then turned out it just causes a new problem.

When I tried Wine1.7, steam loaded and connected fine.
Now, the steam interface loads correctly, and everything in the interface seems to work ok.
But try launching ANY game on steam, and they run fine right up until you press ANY key on the keyboard, then steam & wine exits instantly or the game screen freezes and PC needs to cold reboot as keyboard goes dead.

Purged 1.7 and went back to 1.6 to see if anything was back to normal.... Nope!
Back to the original problem of Steam fails to launch.

You should have mentioned you were using 1.6. Steam will not work in any version of Wine older than 1.7.8. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35030

This is news to me... been running Steam on Wine1.6 for months without any issues.

A Steam update in December broke it for all versions of Wine up to that point. It was fixed in 1.7.8.
