Look I am not a master of programming/coding or anything but I'm not a complete idiot. Why does it have t obe so hard to just install the latest version of Wine on Ubuntu? I mean- I can't just go on the software centre and click upgrade (I have v1.4.1) because the option isn't there. And when I go on your website there is nothign to download- it insists that the links havve to be opened by a programme that I have to find in nautilus. WTF?! I don't care if the programme is software centre I don't know wher eto find the executable (or whatever linux has instead) and I don't see why I should have to? I don't knkow what a PPA is but I know for sure that typing the stuff into terminal that it case damn sure didn't do squat. You know, I don't care if it is possible in some stupid way that you need to be an IT professional to think of- it is plain stupid and idiotic that for all of the undoubted expertise it must take to create and develop something like Wine, it nevertheless doesn't occur to anyone to make it possible to get hold of for an average user. What is this if not the linux equivalent of the BSOD?
You may carry on now...
I have ubuntu Precise.

install from ppa if you want the latest and greatest

Report problems to your distro package maintainer.
Re: I'm sorry but this is ridiculous [semi-rant]
Look- I wish it was, or perhaps you're half-trolling.
this site is a very long way from self-explanatory.
The instrucitons on "how to install this PPA" start with:
Step 1: On the PPA's overview page, look for the heading that reads Adding this PPA to your system. Make a note of the PPA's location, which looks like:
ppa:gwibber-daily/ppa
Ok- so What is gwibber? is that what I'm supposed to replace? or should it be gwibber-daily?
presumably I have to find what to replac it with on the page as per the instructions- where is it? as it is on the site why can't it just tell me what to type?
I could install wine 1.7 within playonlinux with just a few clicks. Why should it be so much harder outside of it?
I just don't understand why there isn't a .deb file that does this automatically. Or something else. Rocket science?
I found http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubuntu-ppa ... explained/ to tell me what a ppa is for anyone else reading this in a similar situation.

Re: I'm sorry but this is ridiculous [semi-rant]
and who is a "package maintainer"? Canonical?
And frankly I'm doubtful that it the product isn't owrking as intended- my complaint is that there is inadequate explanation available to show me how to do that.

I have no idea what gwibber is, but I do know that neither our instructions here nor the instructions on Launchpad say any such thing.mhcdavis wrote: this site is a very long way from self-explanatory.

If you are having trouble learning how to use your package manager, ask for help on the Ubuntu forum. This forum is for Wine questions only, and basic knowledge of how to use your operating system is assumed here.
Re: I'm sorry but this is ridiculous [semi-rant]
mhcdavis really you come across as breaking rule 1. When dealing with wine read pages that are in the winehq.org domain before everything else.
mhcdavis we have a running battle with distributions over wine. Wine is a highly complex program to the point there are sections in the Linux kernel specially so wine can run applications. Nothing else on Linux uses those code sections.
Canonical from our point of view fully responsible for all issues with the 1.4.1 they are shipping. Since we have discontinued support for anything prior to 1.6.x except for rare exceptions.
mhcdavis Canonical sets the default package sources. Canonical does not add wine PPA by default. Canonical does not stay upto date. Stable branches wine does a max of once every 12 months it should not be that hard to keep upto date with.
mhcdavis basically don't come to us to complain. The party who has all the power to make the user experience good is the Distribution maker.
playonlinux does many things to get around the limitations most of these bad.
https://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu mhcdavis really it is not many steps and the steps would be way simpler if Canonical either make wine PPA default or kept their packages upto date.
This PPA is managed by Scott Ritchie and Maarten Lankhorst.
Yes Scott and Maarten are both developers who work on the wine project. They have sometimes failed to update the wine download page.
mhcdavis is there really anything wrong with https://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu how todo it working around Canonical inaction.
mhcdavis really I don't think there is a inadequate explanation how todo the install at all.
I just think you did not visit our download page then started blame us for a stack of crap outside our control. Please go and rip it up the party responsible and let us get back at doing the best we can for people who are polite.

The reason you cannot is Canonical fails to update their wine packaging forcing us to use PPA to work around the issue.I can't just go on the software centre and click upgrade (I have v1.4.1) because the option isn't there.
