OS X wine port install error

Post by god720 »

I tried installing wine using MacPorts, and this is what happened:

Code: Select all

ryan-vecas-macbook-pro:~ rveca$ sudo port install wine
Password:
--->  Configuring expat
Error: Target org.macports.configure returned: configure failure: shell command " cd "/opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_ports_textproc_expat/work/expat-2.0.1" && ./configure --prefix=/opt/local --mandir=/opt/local/share/man " returned error 77
Command output: checking build system type... i386-apple-darwin9.3.0
checking host system type... i386-apple-darwin9.3.0
checking for gcc... /usr/bin/gcc-4.0
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

Error: The following dependencies failed to build: expat fontconfig freetype zlib libiconv gperf fontforge gettext ncurses ncursesw giflib jpeg libpng libxml2 tiff libxslt openssl pkgconfig render xrender
Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Have you installed the development tools (XCode)?

I was not aware that needed to be installed. Where can I get it?

XCode is on the installation DVD. Insert the DVD and then scroll down
to Optional Installs, if you are using Tiger. Open the folder and
select XCode.pkg. On Leopard, you have to select Optional Installs and
then select XCode from the listing. In both cases, it is highly
recommended that you upgrade Safari to 3.0 or higher AND use Software
Update to update installed packages. Unless you are attempting to
build Wine as an experiment, I recommend using pre-built Darwine. Mike
Kronenberg and Zach (I cannot remember his last name) provide them.
Mike's builds use a drag and drop install method and Zach's use the
Apple Installer.

Using MacPorts here... Wine compiles without a problem in Leopard.

I tried Darwine, and it didn't work. Plus, isn't that for PowerPC?

I think I got it working, but is there a way to make it so that you can launch an exe by double clicking it instead of having to go through the terminal?

See the wiki at http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX - or
http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX/Installing for specific details. Method One
should do what you want: It's a .pkg installer that sets things up so you
can double click on a .exe and run it automatically with Wine. Method Two
is another way of running wine as you have it set up now.

Ok so I installed it, and it doesn't make exes work just by double clicking. It says to use the winecfg.exe files to set it up, but how do I open them?

Do you have X11 installed? What happens when you double click a .exe? Are
you on an intel mac? "it doesn't work" is pretty vague.

I have X11 installed, I am on an Intel Mac, and it asks me to choose an application when I double click an exe.

Am I supposed to put the file "Wine.bundle" somewhere? How do I make it so that I can double click exe files?

Select WineHelper.app which is located in the /Applications/Darwine folder.

And to answer your other email, you should keep WineHelper and Wine.bundle
in the same folder (That is, /Applications/Darwine)

Do you mean WineHelper.zip? I don't have anything called WineHelper.app.

No. There are two versions, one for the PowerPC, which is very much out
of date, and one for Intel, of which there are several builders. The
PowerPC version of Darwine relies on a X86 emulator that needs to be
worked on. If you visit MikesMassiveMess, Mike Kronenberg builds Intel
Darwine with a drag and drop installer (.dmg), which is what I use.
Zach Taylor also provides Darwine builds as well, and they use the Apple
installer (.pkg).
The versions available from darwine.sourceforge.net were 0.9.23, which
is very old. I have not checked the site lately.

I got it. The problem was that I tried unzipping it before I installed Xcode, so I didn't bother trying again after I installed Xcode. Works perfectly now (or at least winecfg.exe does). Thanks a lot for the help.
