Steam help

Im trying to use steam through wine, I load it up, login, and without any error or notification, it just dissapears. I have tried re-installing steam 3-4 times, but the same thing happens each time.Help?

Wine version? If it's 1.7.7, there was a bug affecting Steam just fixed. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35030

Hi,

i'm experiencing the same problem, running Wine 1.7.7 in Ubuntu. I had the same problem yesterday with 1.4.1, but managed to upgrade wine using the ppa repository.

Yesterday I was able to get Steam running, even login and download/install a game. It crashed when I tried to launch the game and I've never got it running again...

How may I get a .deb for this fixed wine?

The fix will be in 1.7.8. Unless something disrupts the normal release schedule, it should be out on Friday.

Just a quick question as I seem to be having the same problem. I did the same thing as versvs, however I was wondering if it was a steam update that caused it to misbehave in wine, as 3 days ago everything was working fine.

That's not how you run apps in Wine. Is that output from the Linux client? That's not supported here.

yes it is, mint 15- mate. being new to linux, ignorant, retired fool artist and a partial (not complete) idoit , would you please show or point me in the right direction. would note that it did work until recent steam update

If you're looking for help with the Linux client, you need to ask Valve for support. It has nothing to do with Wine.

If you mean help with how to run the Windows client in Wine, follow the instructions in the AppDB. Note that no version of Wine older than 1.7.8 will work with the current client. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=19444

I'm hoping someone can help me here. I had the same problem as everyone else here. Upgraded to Wine 1.7.8 and got the blank text problem. I understand from the discussion on the WINE page for Steam (given above by Dimeslo) that the answer to that problem is to turn off dmwrite.dll by invoking Steam in the following way "wine Steam.exe -no-dwrite". My problem is that for the life of me I can't find Steam.exe. It's not where I'd expect it ~/.wine/drive_c/programs. I installed Steam using Winetricks, so I'm thinking that Winetricks put it in some standard folder that it uses, but can't find that. No ~/.winetricks folder that I can find. I suppose it's in root somewhere, but not sure. A "whereis steam" only gets me locations that my linux client is in, not the windoze client. Oh, and just for clarification, Winetricks created an icon and put it in my WINE menu. But, I haven't been able to find anything there that gives me a clue as te where it's actually launching from. I'm running KDE on an Ubuntu 12.04 base. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Dimeslo, I was able to find it there and the command works. Is there some way to automate that call in WINE Config? Or is it better to automate with a script?

I guess it's a matter of preference. I ended up doing both (wrote a script to launch steam and set WINE config for no-dwrite). Both work well. I find that I prefer the WINE config fix since that allows me to launch steam using the Icon that wintricks put in my menu. But, opening Dolphin and launching from there is pretty much the same. The only real difference is my wanting to close Dolphin after launching steam. Just wanted people to know that it can be done both ways and that it's pretty much six of one half a dozen of another.
