help running embossing printer on Wine

Post by loshakova »

Hello,
I am hoping to get my 11-year-old ViewPlus Tiger Professional embossing printer running on my Linux computer via Wine.

I have a Dell Inspiron 580s, with a fresh install of Linux Mint 13, 64-bit, Mate desktop.

I called ViewPlus this morning. They don't support Linux, but said that a few other users had been able to get their printers running in Windows virtual boxes on Macs. However, they didn't seem to have a lot of experience with this, and I don't either. I've downloaded the most recent driver update for this printer, but according to the Wine info I've seen, I can't install the driver in Wine. Will it work in Wine if I first install it in Linux, even though the driver is not Linux-compatible? I tried installing the driver through Winetricks, but it wasn't recognized...if that means that I need to move it to a different folder, I'm not sure which one to move it to.

Grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks.

Windows hardware drivers don't work in Wine. You need a Linux driver, and if there is none, your only other option is to run Windows in a VM, which is what they undoubtedly meant by "Windows virtual boxes."

Interestingly, I was able to install the driver in Wine using the Wine Windows Program Loader. I haven't been able to test it out yet -- the printer is old enough that it only has a parallel-to-parallel cable, and my computer is new enough that it has no parallel port. Next step, therefore, is to buy a parallel-to-USB adaptor. I'm planning to get one from Amazon, so I can return it if it doesn't work.

In case the printer won't run on Wine, can you recommend a virtual box that you like for Mint 13? I stopped using Windows programs when I switched to Linux in 2010, so I haven't needed one.

Thanks.

If it's a parallel device, you will probably also have to configure your parallel ports. http://www.winehq.org/docs/wineusr-guid ... ure#AEN894

Let us know if it works (probably not, but it would be very interesting if it did).

As for VMs, the two main no-cost choices are VMWare Player (proprietary) and VirtualBox (free). I use the former, and it's worked fine for me, but people using VirtualBox also seem generally happy with it. Try both, pick the one you like best.
