Sonic & All-Star Racing Transformed on Ubuntu

I'm currently attempting to play Sonic & All-Star Racing Transformed on my Ubuntu machine through Wine.

Ubuntu 13.04
Linux Kernel 3.8.0-26-generic
PlayOnLinux 4.1.1
Wine 1.5.2
Intel HD Graphics 4000

I try to launch the game through PlayOnLinux (Wine) using a Steam prefix. I've set all of the game's graphics settings to low and made to so it appears on a 640X480 window. When said window appears, I only see a black screen. Steam notifies me that the Steam In-game Overlay is available and I can confirm that that works fine, but the black screen is still there. If I attempt to run the game at full screen, I get the same result. I've also noticed that my computer gets a performance hit whenever the game is running. Attempting to run the game at full screen in native resolution (1920X1080) slows my computer to a crawl, despite the fact that the game does not seem to actually render anything. I've attempted to launch it with other Wine versions, but I get the same result. I highly doubt the issue is caused by having low specs; my computer has an Intel Core i7 3770S possessor running at 3.10GHz and with 4 cores, it also has Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated graphics, as stated above; and 4 GB of RAM. My computer has also run other games with similar or higher requirements just fine.

Has anyone tried to run this game on Wine with any luck? Has anyone confronted this issue before? I've searched the Internet and WineHQ, but there doesn't seem to be any tests for this game.

I doubt it has anything to do with it, but, just in case, my version of the game has a Spanish localization (or, at least, it's supposed to; I can only see a black screen so I can't see if it's actually localized or not).

Your Wine version is old, and PlayOnLinux is not supported here. Upgrade to the latest development release of plain Wine. You can also try disabling the Steam in-game overlay. If neither fixes the black screen, post terminal output.

It's quite possible that the problem is the Intel Linux graphics drivers. Does the demo have the same problem on your system? If it does, I can test it on an Nvidia card with the proprietary driver. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ ... ormed.html

Thank you for the reply.

I've tried it with Wine 1.6-rc4 and I've also disabled the Steam In-game Overlay; same result. I'll try out the demo once it downloads.

If you've been able to launch the demo even in a black window, you've gotten further than I can get with it. It installs, but crashes on start for me.

Have you tried using the config tool (Launcher.exe)? The black window appears if you configure it so that it doesn't go full screen. You'll need dotnet40 for the config tool to work.

Okay, I managed to get to the black window.

I had already tried launcher.exe with the settings you originally specified. But I noticed in my console output that winex11 was complaining about a missing resolution, 1280x720, even though I had not chosen that resolution in the launcher. So on a hunch I set winecfg to run in a 1280x720 emulated virtual desktop, and that got rid of the crash. The black window goes fullscreen within the 1280x720 virtual desktop regardless of what resolution I choose for the game in the launcher; that's very probably a Wine bug.

The console output you posted is all from the game; none of those lines are Wine messages. I get all that, too, but I also get Wine messages mixed in. Unfortunately, there's nothing in the Wine part that jumps out at me as an obvious cause for the black screen. But I can't help but wonder about the many lines from the game about not finding some file "that no longer exists, will prolly need fixing due to the way HasLoaded() behaves for files that don't exist." Maybe Wine is exposing a game bug.

There is no "GameData" folder on the Data folder in the demo's directory, or on the full game's directory for that matter. I'm not sure if the terminal output is referring to the game's Data folder or somewhere else, but it does make me wonder: could it be that the game has no assets to load, and that's why it only shows a black screen (nothing to render)?

If that were the case, it might be a Wine bug, since I've already installed the game twice (the original and the demo) and get the same result while you have the same issue. Perhaps Wine did not installed it properly, or maybe it's some kind of glitch in the game's installer.

That's what I was wondering. Does that folder exist on Windows? I can't test that (don't have a Windows box that can handle this game).

GameData, GameAssets and Frontend are all stored in a TOC + Bin CD Image, unfortunately the toc file is encrypted, so there's no way to extract the files from these images to the filesystem. (The M00 and M01 files are the raw binary files with the cd contents and the toc files store the file structure)

And mounting those images seems to be exactly the step where it fails.

So as of now there's two solutions:

Proper:
1. Identifying the cause of why it fails to mount these images (I can't find any error messages related to this, so it must think the mounting succeeded)

Hacky/Possibly not strictly legal:
2. Decrypting the Toc files and extracting the images to the file system. The game doesn't seem to distinguish between virtual and real paths anyways.

I have not received a reply from the developer concerning the issue. According to Daverball, the problem is about the CD images located in the Data folder in the game's directory.

Any ideas on how to make Wine mount these images?

CDEmu is supposed to be able to mount them.

Nop.

Here's what I get if I try to mount GameAssets.toc:

GDBus.Error:net.sf.cdemu.CDEmuDaemon.errorMirage.ParserError: No parser can handle the image file!

I get the same error with all .toc files and all the .M00 files.

The reason you can't mount them outside the game, is that at the very least the toc files are encrypted, maybe the M00 files as well, but it's difficult to tell, when the toc-file is encrypted.

toc files are supposed to be plain text files listing the contents of an image.

It seems like an odd decision to package the game's assets and data this way, that they encrypt all of it is less odd though, it's not uncommon that integral assets are encrypted for the purposes of DRM.

Whatever the reason, the game works in Windows and not in Wine. There's no easy workaround that I can see. Whether it's something that can or will be fixed in Wine is for a developer to decide.

Somebody needs to figure out how the game is trying to access those disc images.
Presumably a WINEDEBUG=+file log would be of interest.
(Attached, not inline, please. And I probably don't have time to look at it myself :-(
And attaching the log isn't likely to be as good as a wine dev trying it out himself,
so best you analyze it yourself rather than uploading it.)
