Cannot start campaign in rome total war

I am having a few problems with Rome total war.

The first is that the mouse lags in the menu, and the second is that it seems to hang on the campaign loading screen. I might not have waited long enough as it did this briefly in single player mode.

Does anyone have any suggestions for either of these problems?

AMD processor

Wine version? If it's not 1.6, upgrade.
