Kill unresponsive DOS app

Post by Balphus »

Before someone says this has been answered numerous times before - I have been searching for a simple answer for ages and google has conspired to keep it from me.

My question - is there any easy way of killing a full screen DOS app that has lost keyboard input without restarting Gnome?

Specific - it's original Doom. Occasionally, the mouse and keyboard control reverts to the desktop with the Doom display still occupying the full screen. There is no way to get to the Doom menu and exit. I have had to kill/restart Gnome to get out of it.

There has to be a better way.

Try running it fullscreen in a virtual desktop.

Do you lose keyboard for your Gnome enviro as well?

For example; my GTA SA will crash (kind of rare now) on loading and I am stuck in full black screen. So I use Ctrl+ALT+F1 and switch to a virtual terminal "pkill" to end the process. Exit and Ctrl+ALT+F7 to get back.

Without any keyboard function it would otherwise be impossible.
