directx 11 games on directx 10 card in Wine

Post by voice »

I am considering buying a graphics card.
Theoretically, when directx 11 support is implemented in Wine, will I be able to play directx 11 games on a directx 10 card?

Wine converts directx calls to opengl, right? So does directx version support matter?

Wine's DirectX 10 and 11 are still in developement. There is no proper DX10 or 11 support for this moment.

But even if it translates the DirectX calls to OpenGL it shouldn't provide full feature DirectX 11 effects on DX10 card, because there are other significant things like Shader Model version which matters on OpenGL too, for example, OGL version 4.0 equal to DirectX 11, if your card wouldn't fully support OGL4.0 you won't get full featured DX11.

You should really buy a DX 11 card, I'd even recommend DX11.1, but that depends on which games you want to play. How much money can you save by buying a DX10 only card? Maybe a few dollars, but in the long run you are wasting your money. In maybe one year you'd notice, that you need a DX11 card for some fancy game. Buy cheap, buy twice.
