Audio is too fast

Post by Xorlium »

Hello,

I've been searching for a few hours, but I don't really know enough to know what's wrong. Wine was working perfectly (I'm using Chakra) before, but for a while now sound has been garbled in some applications that used to run fine (for example, Sam and Max, Sins of a Solar Empire, Plants vs Zombies, etc). It's also garbled when I do a "test sound" when running winecfg. BUT for some games, like Mount and Blade: Warband and Mask of the Ninja the sound works fine ingame, EXCEPT for the opening mini-movie.

I'm not really sure when it started, since I was playing M&B:WB at the time and that one has no problems, but I used to be able to play many other games (mentioned before) perfectly and now I can't.

The version in the repository is 1.5.31, and I also tried building my own 1.6rc2, and both have the exact same problem. I tried the wine-multimedia one, but that one doesn't have sound.

I also tried in a clean wine prefix, same thing. When doing a "Test Sound" I just hear short static and the following message appears:

Code: Select all

err:ole:CoInitializeEx Attempt to change threading model of this apartment from multi-threaded to apartment threaded
What can I do now? I read the wiki and I see that there are some problems with pulse audio, and some solutions, but they are all hard to follow. For example, how do I know if my pulse audio is going through ALSA?

Thanks!

Sorry to say, if you have Pulse Audio this is a common problem. So much so, I purged my Pulse Audio and use straight ALSA now. I just got fed up having to reset my games and apps due to sound issues. Since the purge I have not noticed a difference in my audio quality other than the Wine related programs sound much better.

What I use to do when the audio messed up, I would use System Activity window to end the pulse process. On my system it would reset itself and things would work for a few hours and mess up again. Unless someone here can voice a real good reason why I need Pulse Audio, I think it is a pain in the.... well I am glad it is gone.
