no sound in compiled 1.5.30 or 1.5.31 version

Hi,

I tried to compile 1.5.30 and 1.5.31 32 bits version of Wine on Debian Sid AMD64. Both times, cross-compiling worked without error message, and wine works. However, there is no sound. When I start wine on command line, an error message says it can't find any sound driver.

There is no problem with deb-packages, but I would learn to compile Wine.

I installed oss4-development and started configure again. There is no more error message about sound, but sound still does not work.

I tried to install libxcursor-dev:i386 and libxi-dev:i386, but it's impossible because of dependancies. For example:

I don't really know which of the above developpement packages are really necessary, but it seems impossible on Sid AMD64.

You absolutely need this one.

The other WARNINGs are not related to sound, but unless you plan on only running console apps you are very likely to need them.

I installed prelink and I compiled wine again.

The error messages are still the same. Textaloud (text to speech software) works, but still without sound.

I cannot choose a sound driver is selected on the Audio tab in winecfg, there is only the default one.

The reason I am asking is because you mentioned installing the OSSv4 headers got rid of the error message about it in ./configure, but is OSSv4 actually the sound driver your system uses? Most Linux systems use ALSA.

What I wanted to know is what it says on the Audio tab in winecfg in the Driver Diagnostics section. Mine says "Selected driver: winealsa.drv". What does yours say?

A couple of things:

Pulseaudio can have problems with Wine, so try disabling it. However, I don't think that's the issue here.

You said earlier that installing the the OSSv4 headers got rid of the audio-related ./configure warning, however, what you just posted indicated you are using ALSA, not OSSv4. So my guess is that the only warning it got rid of is the one pertaining to OSSv4, and ./configure still shows

You need to install the ALSA headers and the 32 bit ALSA libraries. If you are absolutely sure these things are installed, you may need to make a symlink so Wine can find them.

What are ALSA headers ? Alsa developpement package ? libasound2-dev:i386 ist installed. I also found libalsaplayer-dev:i386, is that what you mean ?

Anyway, after installing liboss4-salsa2:amd64 oss-compat and liboss4-salsa2:amd64, sound in winecfg works !
But TextAloud will no more start.

I first tried to compile wine in a copy of my Sid system: TextAloud worked, but without sound. Then I tried in my main Sid: sound works in winecfg, but TexAloud won't start. After upgrading the 2nd Sid sytem, same result. So I suppose the reason is upgraded packages, but how can I find which ones ?

imo the whole multiarch approach of Debian/Ubuntu is completely broken by design, even if it is said to become working in late Ubuntu. The whole thinking of the multiarch makers seems to be "cool, you got multiarch now, it will be working perfectly as long as you don't use it". Most people on Debian/Ubuntu 64bit resort to using 32bit chroot to compile wine. I'd recommend you to install(chroot) a 32 bit Debian and build wine there. For a properly working wine you need most of the files that configure is missing, especially opengl, libmpg, libxml, libxi in a recent 32 bit version.

For TextAloud not working, please post terminal output.

TextAloud does not start at all, I only see the error message after

As lahmbi5678 said, you need to install pretty much everything ./configure is complaining about. For things you are sure are installed (such as libxrender-dev:i386), you may need to make a symlink for ./configure to find it.

I compiled wine 1.5.31 in a chroot with Debian unstable 32 bits. Then I copied the wine-files in /usrlocal/bin to /usr/local/bin in the main system.

Sound in winecfg works, but TextAloud still does not start, the error message in the shell was

I installed gir1.2-gudev-1.0 for typelib.

I restarted compiling, the only error message is

But libosmesa6-dev 9.1.3-6 is installed, and there is no newer version in experimental. So I certainly have to set a symlink so that wine will find it.

Googling for that GUID indicates that some dlls are missing, which come with windows (called SAPI), but not with wine. The appdb entries for TextAloud describe some complicated procedures to get it working.

I'm not sure, if the issue with libosmesa is important for Textaloud, but it seems to be a known issue:

Symlinks probably won't help. I don't know how to fix that in Debian.

If it's a SAPI problem, I don't understand. On the same system, wine debs from http://www.winehq.org/download/debian
work and there is no problem with TextAloud, so SAPI is correctly installed.

Can compiled wine have problems with TextAloud that wine from source does not have ?
