Respondus LockDown Browser

Post by wrkrbee »

So I was able to get Respondus LockDown Browser installed and launchable on my Ubuntu box. BUT now I get the error

"The browser can't be used in virtual machine software such as Virtual PC, VMWare and Parallels."

I've read that there are ways around this, but I haven't found any instruction as to how to get around it. I was also told there was a post on the forums here, but I have searched with no results returned.

Sounds like the app is designed to refuse to run if it detects it is not running in Windows. There's nothing you can do about that.

If that were the case I wouldn't have been able to get it to run on another Mac based virtual image.

It IS the case because you can get the error "The browser can't be used in virtual machine software". Please do not ask us to help you bypass it because this is not legal in many countries. Only legal way is to ask app's developers to fix this problem (Wine is not virtual machine). But there is good chance that they may call Wine "virtual machine" anyway or change error to something like "browser must be used in Windows without virtual machine" and ignore your problem. In this case you have to find better application or use Windows without virtual machine.

Illegal? Unless I was violating some type of use license, I fail to see how it would be illegal to load a driver or driver(s) that would get it to work within Wine on Linux. That's like saying that it would be illegal to run MS Office using Wine. The problem is they haven't ported the browser to work with Linux. I'm not looking to modify the software. Apparently some have gotten it to work on Wine, but didn't document it accurately. Unfortunately, my online school uses this program for tests (to try and prevent cheating) and my strong every day boxes are Linux. Oddly enough although it causes a lot of problems upon the systems it is installed upon, it really doesn't prevent cheating because most people have more than one box available to them and could simply use it to look up the information and if they were desperate enough a camera to take a picture of the screen for the questions.

Circumventing DRM is illegal in the U.S., and questions about how to do it are against forum rules. http://wiki.winehq.org/ForumGuidelines
