Sound glitches

Post by Rayman54 »

Hello everybody, I've got a little problem with the Wine sound. I'm sorry if this problem has already been posted,I'm too lazy for searching. With any application (Project 64, World Of Warcraft, etc...), the sound is just horrible ! Sometimes it works fine for 30-40 seconds, then completly buging, and then there is no sound. I've heard that a "OSS" (or something like that) sound driver is better than the ALSA driver. Is that right ? And can I install it ? Thank you so much for taking your time to read me and trying to resolve my problem ! :) (Sorry if I made any mistakes, I'm French)

Wine version: 1.4 (downloaded and installed from the site wineHQ)
Ubuntu version: 12.04.2 LTS Precise Pangolin
Sound card: Via HD VT1708S

Are you using PulseAudio? That sounds like a known bug in PA. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46296

If you are using PA and want to keep it, try using the Ubuntu wine1.5 package; that package is built with the unofficial winepulse driver, which may solve your issue. (If you do end up using it, note that any problems with sound need to be reported to the package maintainer, as that driver is not supported here.)

Make sure you have the latest versions of ALSA and alsa-plugin installed.

Wine does have an OSS driver, but few people seem to use it, so I can't say whether it will work better for you. If nothing else works, it may be worth a try. How to install OSS is not a Wine question; ask on the Ubuntu forum.

Hi, I've got same problem about month ago... idk what's the problem, but what helped me was deleting whole ~/.wine and downloading dlls again via winetricks.

I currently use Wine 1.5.22 and some of the games the sound is fine, for a while, and then it has issues. For example; I play Guild Wars and the sound will be fine until I adjust with the keyboard volume settings. Then the music crackles and is played at double speed. For the few games that this happens; I can get it back by CTRL+Esc and killing the "pulse audio" process. My system then refreshes and a new pulse audio is started. I either get the sound back or it remains muted until I restart the game. But I don't blame Wine for this, Wine is doing its job, the game is at fault not working with Wine properly the way it should.

Hello all,

@Dimesio: Yes, I use PulseAudio. I uninstall Wine 1.4 and try with Wine 1.5 today and I will post if there is any changes. If there is any changes, I will try to install OSS, I will ask on the Ubuntu forum, I hope somebody will reply fast. Thanks you :)

@Warmos: I've already deleted everything in "/Home/*username*/.wine" a few time but it never changed anything. Thanks you for trying helping me :)

@Simon of Aragon: For me on Wine 1.4, on Project64, the sound start bugging when I've got heavy framedrop (exemple: going from 50 FPS to 30 FPS or even lower), and on World Of Warcraft, the sound works fine 2 or 3 seconds, and then start bugging. It's seems it works fine on limited zone of the map, like a few meters... When it crashes, I stop the game and Wine, and execute a text file as a program. The file contain "pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start" on two separated lines. Then I start WoW. But now I disable sound on the game to avoid that, but it's not cool to play without the game sounds :'( For sure, Wine is a great program, all of my Windows applications run properly on it, I got nothing to say, or maybe this little sound glitch... But just disable sound and listen to music is great too :)

Thanks you all for fast replying :)

Hi again, sorry for double post :'(

Using Wine 1.5.28 solved all of my current problems ! I can now enjoy playing games all day long without rebooting PulseAudio server. But now I got another problems... Trackmania Nations Forever has "Freezes" every seconds, and Project64 has a small delay between video and sound, like 500-1000ms... But theses problems are not serious issues and I don't need to fix them. I've installed a great driver for my controller on Windows so I don't think I will play theses games on Wine. Thank you so much to help me fixing my problem ! Have a nice day everybody !

SOLUTION: If anybody have this audio problem on Wine, you need to upgrade to Wine 1.5 (the one on development), and your problem will disappear.
