Has anyone successfully ran SimCity 2013 in Wine
I've tried it, but once it loads up the game freezes before it can start. Has anyone managed to run the game successfully? I ran into one thread that confirmed that the BETA release ran well through wine. I just wanted to confirm this and see if anyone knows what could be causing this freezing issue?
Re: Has anyone successfully ran SimCity 2013 in Wine
Yes I've gotten it to work a few times.
However, currently it does not work, and I'm unsure of the cause.
The first trick is getting it to install. You ether need to patch Wine so that Origin can download and install, or you need to download it with origin in windows then copy the download over to the Wine Install of Origin. When started Origin will pickup the windows download and finish. You may also need to install the vcrun2010 with winetricks.
Launching the game is also tricky. Origin frequently will not start up and will need to be terminated to try again. If any of it's dependent programs like the EA Proxy Installer are left running it will mess up launching Origin it's easiest if you've terminated any wine related applications or from a complete reboot if you're unsure. You must launch though Origin, and if you try to bypass it it will fail to launch the game, or it will launch Origin for you if you're lucky.
When it was working, half the time the game would crash trying to launch. Because Origin is unable to tell that a game is terminated in Wine it will have to be closed and you'll have to go though launching Origin again. However, once you're in the game it worked just fine. It was even robust enough to handle the servers going up and down without terminating the game. The individual regions seem to run completely locally with minimal network connection to run.
Starting Sunday morning I have been unable to launch the game. I've tried everything I know. A clean install in an Empty Wine. And even a patched Wine for Origin, and even though Origin runs better the game crashes before it really gets to anything.
I know it's doing the basic card detection, then it generates the basic config files in the User Data directory. Then when it should be launching the graphical window to allow me to queue up, pick a server, or launch the game it crashes with a back trace. I suspect something changed when the started upgrading the servers this weekend and what ever they are requesting the software to do is now crashing the game on Wine.

Yes. But only once at a time. It hangs at 100% installed, but if you wait five minutes and then mouseover, the 'play' button works. Sometimes it crashes after that, and sometimes it doesn't.
My problem has been that this means it doesn't behave like it STAYED installed. So l uninstall with origin (which still says 'installing,' mind you) and then kill Origin when l'm done playing. Next time l want to, l clear everything out and start all over again.
There is certainly a better way and l'll have to poke around now that l've found this thread, but l thought that might at least give the rest of you a good laugh or something. The 'hangs but still playable shortly thereafter' thing at least might be helpful.

I am (kind of) running it. Installed by letting Origin install the installer on VMware, moved files under Wine and continued from there.
Since I installed it it updated itself a few times. One in 5 attempts it crashed at startup and needs to be killed. Other than that the game itself runs smooth (and way faster than in vwmare).
Only problem, terrain textures aren't shown. The game works, everything else is shown, even with rather high settings, but the whole city is suspended in the void, that kind of makes it hard to play.

I got the terrain problem too. It was all just blackness, right? But that was only after I changed the graphics settings. I think I'm running windowed at lowest settings to avoid it, but I also dimly recall it may just have been if I had anti-aliasing turned on, so maybe it'd be easier to try turning that off first.

Hi. I installed Origin and Sim City through Play On Linux. Installation process went smoothly, although I had to manually download the game and unzip it to the Origin Games folder. However, my problem is that I cannot connect to any Sim City server. It says try again later. Looking at the status pages all server are actually online. I had a look at the traffic sent between my computer and the servers. And it looks like the TCP handshakes fail for some reason. The pattern I am seeing when I trying to connect is normally like this http://oi48.tinypic.com/orqnnr.jpg
Have you had any luck getting into the game lately?

Last Origin update breaks it all. Crashes at startup.
Re: Has anyone successfully ran SimCity 2013 in Wine
Origin version 9.1.15.109 - 218578 will not download any games! It tries to start and checks disk space then asks you too agree to the licensies and then says it is dowloading but after several minutes it still shows zero percent downloaded! It might be like simcity 4 install where wine dosn't update the progress bar but it still installs, so I will wait awhile to see if it installs. I'll watch a tv show and glance at my laptop every few minutes to see if it ever gets the download.
