Problem installing anything with wine

Post by Ryuuakari »

Hello everybody. Today I'd like to address the issue I have with wine. I wanted to install a program called Enjin client (http://www.enjin.com/client)
But every time i try to prompt I get errors. I've been using this guide (http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/) to install wine properly. And followed every single step that he mentioned. I even checked my Mono, D-bus and NET. but it stills goes error. A some sort of log of my terminal looks like this.

Code: Select all

Hi Ryuuakari,

which operating system are you running? You might need to install Xcode from the apple developer site: https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action (you need a valid Apple-ID for the download).

Under 'Categories' just check 'Developer Tools' for an easier and faster finding of a suitable version for your OS.

Hope this will work out for you!

Cheers mate,

@Maexel

I'm running a IMac Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Mid 2011. During the guide I followed from David, it told me about getting x-code and such. When I look at my application folder, it says I already have x-code, assuming that is the program I need, but does it require so sort of update?

Xcode used to come with command line tools... the current version does not. You need to launch XCode go in preferences and look for add ons and tell it to download and install the command line tools.

I'm not sure thats your issue though as that usually prevents compiling.

you have two problems going on.

1. you are trying ot run a exe thats not in the current folder... you need to cd into the folder with the exe before trying to run it with wine, so that wine can find it.

2. your X11 (XQuartz) doesn't look like its working... you may want to just go download the latest version of XQuartz and install it and reboot.

First of all, I have cd it to the folder hence: fredericks-imac:~ l-v-acev$ cd downloads (I assume this should put me to the correct folder. Unless am also suppose to type in "ls -f" to see what that folder contains). Note: that downloads is also where the software EnjinInstaller.exe is located the client am trying to install.

For the second is this their latest model of xQuartz? XQuartz-2.7.4.dmg, cause I can't find any later version then that. I also went to open that application itself and check for update where it concluded it was the latest version of xQuartz.

Regardless to that do I have to cd xQuartz, EnjinInstaller.exe (the software am trying to install)? Do I have to have these application running while trying to install EnjinInstaller? (application such as Xcode, xQuartz etc.)

i see in the bottom you finally got to the right folder... you really should just put up the needed information and not copy and paste a bunch of extra junk, like when you tried to run it from the wrong folder earlier.

It mainly just looks like your X server is failing to launch... why? i dunno... not really a Wine issue.

You can try for a test to open XQuartz, and go in a xterm in XQuartz and try to launch your program... its more likely to work since its already in X and not having to launch X.... but regardless, normally on an XQuartz install, it fixes your mac so XQuartz starts automatically when anything tries to use X11... but for some reason yours is either not starting, or not communicating with it.

For a test... in terminal just type in...
glxgears
this should come with XQuartz and when you try to launch it, OSX should start up XQuartz and launch glxgears. If this also fails to launch your X server then its definitely not a Wine problem.

@Ryuuakari

In your situation I would try running wine with EnjinInstaller.exe after installing XCode. The latest version for Mountain Lion is 4.6.1. It's on the very top of the side, you can't miss it ;) And as doh123 has stated above, I would check if Command Line Tools are installed as he's described exactly where to find.

Let us now if you've had success installing Enjin.exe and after what steps the Installer was able to proceed. Thanks mate ;).

Cheers,

Its been awhile ive written anything in this post, mainly because of frustration level. I still have the same error so I have two options... Either make this or just uninstall wine. I want this to workout, but I keep getting error with driver and display which I have no clue of what to do with.

I've gone through xCode -> Preference -> Downloads -> Command Tool Line (Installed that)
I've gone through xQuartz -> Check for update (Latest edition is x11 2.7.4)

I've re-done everything http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/ told me to do so.

Instead of installing Enjinn Client I decided to try with Dragon Nest EU and this is how it looks like in the terminal.

Code: Select all

Last login: Tue Apr 30 15:00:10 on ttys001
fredericks-imac:~ l-v-acev$ cd documents
fredericks-imac:documents l-v-acev$ wine DragonNestEuSetup37.exe
Fontconfig warning: ignoring UTF-8: not a valid region tag
Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly.
err:systray:initialize_systray Could not create tray window
Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly.

So what exactly is the issue with my driver and display...?

Does wine have anything to do that I have a Bootcamp as well?

I've done a tiny bit re-search on x server which I think I need to do...? I'll hand out the link here and tell me if that's the issue. Thanks in advance.

XQuartz on Mac is an X11 system for Macs... when it says "X server" with Wine its referring to X11. Its saying your X11 isn't working.

Hi Ryuuakari,

it's kind of depressing if you can't figure out what causes X11 not to run properly with wine. I guess the same error appears when you try to run winecfg in terminal?

Check the terminal respond with command: X -version

You should get a Release version: 'X.org Release ...'
'X.org X Server ...'
'Build Date: ...'

If you didn't get a respond, X server isn't compiled and installed on your OS I think.
As you have already compiled and installed wine with MacPorts, X11 should have been installed
as a dependency of wine. But you might want to try it again, if you haven't got a respond with the
the command above.
Wine needs the following library dependecies:
xorg-libsm, xorg-libXcomposite, xorg-libXcursor, xorg-libXi, xorg-libXinerama, xorg-libXrandr,
xorg-libXxf86vm, xrender

To get them installed, type in Terminal: sudo port install xorg-libsm xorg-libXcomposite xorg-libXcursor xorg-libXi xorg-libXinerama xorg-libXrandr xorg-libXxf86vm xrender

You can copy/paste the above command in italic ;)

Hope this will work out for you.

Cheers mate ;),
