wimx has encountered a serious problem error

Post by labud »

Wine 1.5.6-2.1.2-x86_64 WinMX 3.54b4 openSUSE 12.2 KDE 4.9.5 release 4

I rebooted my machine and now Winmx will not open. All I get is the "wimx has encountered a serious problem and has to close " error.
I don't really understand any of the error msg and what it means.
Could anyone help me solve this problem and get Winmx back up and running again?
Thank You

Your Wine version is old; upgrade to the latest development release.

Rebooting, in itself, should not stop an app from working. Did you change anything on your system?

OK have upgraded Wine to latest and reinstalled WinMX and it works, MOSTLY.
A little annoying thing is that the window that Winmx resides in is uncontrollable by KDE. The window sits on top of everything else and I cannot get to other windows unless I move the window down to the bottom of the monitor. It has no adjustments to make the window bigger or smaller. I was always able to adjust it before and it stayed below other windows when I wanted it to.
In the wine config there is a "Graphics" tab that says"Allow the window manager to control the windows, but if I check this box I cannot start Winmx. I am back to the original error. What could I do about this?

Just an upgrade of KDE from 4.8.5 to 4.9.5

Try running it in an emulated virtual desktop (Graphics tab in winecfg). If you have desktop effects enabled, try turning them off.

That's a significant detail you should have mentioned in your original post.

Sorry, but as I think of it, the winmx thing happened 1st and then because of a problem I was having with a FULLSCREEN mode game, it was suggested that I upgrade to KDE 4.9, which I did. But the original problem that occured with Winmx happened when I tried to adjust the Winmx window size because when I exited the FULLSCREEN mode [from the game] it would knock my Winmx window down to postage stamp size and I would always have to adjust it. So, I went to KDE's window manager [Kwin, I believe] and tried to set it so that the winmx window would not be set smaller. It was then that I started getting the "Winmx has encountered a Serious problem..." error and winmx would not start. I went into desktop Settings > Window Behaviour and tried to reset to defaults just in case I did something wrong there. Then I upgraded to KDE 4.9, and uninstalled Wine/Winmx and reinstalled it, but nothing changed.
As I write this down, I am just now seeing where I may have made a mistake [in Wine config] in the Graphics tab, the setting for the specific program [Winmx] and the Default settings. In my desperation to figure out what was wrong, I altered the default settings, not the specific program settings in Wine config and in Window Behaviour > Specific Applications I had two Wine settings for window size.
I am going to try to reset these areas and see if any difference is made.

OK
After a few changes in Wine config >Graphics tab and KDE Desktop config >Window Behaviour, I am now back to the original Wine/Winmx window that is operated within KDE's window manager.
Sorry to be a bother, I should have written it out exactly and then I probably would have seen my own error.
Thanks for your time and suggestions. They did not go to waste, as I learned something about Wine I did not previously know. [Re:Graphics tab in Wine config.]
