I am running slackware64 linux. In an effort to watch netflix I did the following:
1). installed the 32bit compatibility packages.
2). downloaded wine 1.5.5
3). applied the necessary patches to the wine source
4). compiled and installed wine
5). compiled and installed wine gecko
6). downloaded firefox 16.0.2 and installed
7). downloaded silverlight 4 and installed
all of the above was done under root (I now know that #6 and 7 should have been done under a non-root user. However, all installs worked. I switched to a non-root user and nothing worked. I installed firefox (it works) and tried to install silverlight. Silverlight will not install. I tried removing everything (including $HOME/.wine , $HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine* ,$HOME/.local/share/applications/wine ,$HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine* ,$HOME/.local/share/icons/????_*.{xpm,png} ,$HOME/.local/share/icons/*-x-wine-*.{xpm,png} ) and reinstalling. Silverlight still will not install as it did the first time. Did I miss anything?

Re: netflix on linux
Your version of Wine is old; upgrade to the latest development release and install to a clean wineprefix.

Does the latest release include the patches needed fjor netflix?

Re: netflix on linux
I installed wine-1.5.22 along with a fresh copy on gecko and mono. I also re-installed firefox and silverlight. The netflix home page loaded but froze my machine as soon as I clicked in a movie. Do I need to install the old patches for wine?

Re: netflix on linux
Frankly I had to do the Virtualbox and run my Netflix from there. This option has drawbacks as will require you to install a legit copy of Windows. I use my old XP and trim it down a bit so the Virtual Drive runs about 5GB. Also make sure you have installed the D3D option in Guest Additions. The fault is in the Silverlight player, really a chore to work around. I never got it to work in Wine. If someone ever gets this working in Wine I would dump the Box in a heartbeat.
