How to download wmp.dll?

Have a Windows game that I have installed via Wine, works great, no probs. Publisher released new version, I assume for Windows 8. I installed, it doesn't run, I get: wmp.dll not correctly registered. This obviously has something to do with Windows Media Player, but Winetricks doesn't have this .dll. Any suggestions?

Winetricks can install WMP9 and WMP10. If your game needs the wmp.dll from WMP11, you can try to install it manually. The most recent test in the AppDB gives a recipe for installing it, though it can't play anything. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=8150

Here's an interesting twist: the game is running fine if I su to root and start it! It's only when I try to run it as a user that I get the wmp.dll error!

Sounds like you messed up your wineprefix at some point by running as root. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#run_as_root

The older version of the game still runs just fine as user. I've never run it as root. I only ran the new version of the game as root to see if it would run. It did. As user, it didn't, got the wmp11.dll error. I'm curious as to why root doesn't need the wmp11.dll but user does.

I am getting the same error in my Windows 8 computer. Did you ever figure out how to fix it?

esineath could be as simple as try a clean prefix. I have a suspect that you might have run as root and managed to install windows media player at some point. So now only root can access that file. Or messed around install Windows Media Player 11 and it only half installed at some point.

yellow_k don't have clue how to help Windows 8. Why we can install parts into wine that will refuse to install into Windows 8. Installing Windows Media Player 9 10 or 11 in Windows 8 will damage it. Windows 8 already comes with Windows Media Player 12.

yellow_k so you might have one of those application broken in newer versions of windows where it beg to developer to fix or install Linux and use Wine.

yellow_k : never figured it out, went back to Windows machine for this game, use Linux machine for everything else.
