Error message.

Hello.
I am using Wine 1.0 on Mandriva 2008.1. I only have one program that I want to run with it but I can't get it to work. It installs OK and creates a start up entry but when I try to start it I get a brief glimpse of the start up splash screen followed by the program closing and the following message:

Edit. I have tried win2000, win xp and win 98 emulation and the result is always the same. The 'built in' programs like windows explorer and notepad all run normally.

It would help if you gave the program name. Please look in the
Applications Database (AppDB) for entries related to the program you are
attempting to run.

I didn't include the name of the app for two reasons, firstly it is in the first line of the error message and secondly nobody has ever heard of it so I didn't think it would make that much difference.

Anyway, if it helps you, it is called Canal Planner 6.

It isn't in the App database and I wouldn't really expect it to be as it is old and obscure but something which has no linux equivalent and something I use very regularly.

You may be interested to know that about a year ago I did have it running in an older version of wine but later switched to running it in Virtualbox instead. However I would now like to go back to running it under Wine but I can't make it happen with the present version.

Yes that is it, but version 7 is complete crap. I paid £40 for it (which shows you that I find this app important) but it is so much worse than version 6 that I never use it. (and yes that version certainly doesn't run under Linux or Wine only in Virtualbox).

I will have a look at regression testing shortly, at the moment that phrase doesn't mean much to me but I will investigate it, promise!

Version 7 relies on the Microsoft dot.net framework, it won't even install.

Even if it did I wouldn't want to use it.

Well I just had a look at this regression testing business. I don't think this is going to work.

The first problem is that I have no idea what version of Wine I was running when I could get Canal Planner to work (and it was on Ubuntu which I don't use any more). The second is that it looks horrendously complicated for someone of my limited knowledge.

I know I am a wimp - sorry!

I guess I am going to have to stick with running in VirtualBox unless anyone has any other ideas.

What version of Ubuntu were you using at that time?

That would probably be 7.04 (Kubuntu). Although I was testing 7.10 at the same time so it could have been that as well.

By playing around with this for a long time I have managed to get the start up screen to stay visible long enough to read a more 'digestible' error message than the one I posted earlier. I am sure some of you will be familiar with it:

ActiveX component can't create object

I have seen it in the forums a few times but have not found a solution yet. If anyone knows what to do about this it might be what I need.

As soon as I click OK on the error window the program shuts down.

In case it is of any interest the way in which I got the error message to stay on the screen in the first place is to run the start up command as root instead of user.

most likely the app needs some additional packages insrtalled. Try on a new, fresh ~/.wine, and do

wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks && sh winetricks art2kmin mdac27

Then try install and run app again. Let us know if it works, and if not , consoloutput

Thanks for that reply qwertymn, I will have a go at that tomorrow and let you know what happens.

Edit: Well I did as you suggested, in fact I even went a stage further by completely uninstalling Wine then deleting the ~/.wine directory and then reinstalling the whole lot. At the end of it all I still get the same error

And I only get that if I launch the program as root, otherwise it just shuts down.

Thanks for the suggestion about 'winetricks' I hadn't heard of that. I must do a bit of reading up about it perhaps it can do something about ActiveX errors.
