Change the size of a virtual desktop without closing it

Is it possible to request or force a virtual desktop to change it's size? Applications running within a virtual desktop can request resolution changes and such, but I'm curious if it's possible to do this as a user. All the methods I've found to alter the desktop's size requires the desktop to be closed and then re-opened for it to respond to a size change.
