Problem: No Drive Access for disk utility - Any Ideas?

Hi and thank you for any advice you can give. I'm new to Linux and have read the FAQ, but cannot find an answer to this problem. I had been using Parted Magic from the Ultimate Boot CD but couldn't get Wine installed/configured without errors, so I ran Unetbootin and made my USB bootable. Was able to install Wine finally, configured it finally, and to my surprise could even execute my Disk Utility that checks for Disk Alignment on Advanced Format Drives -- well it runs, but doesn't work.

Here is the problem: When I run the .exe using Wine, it complains about not seeing any disks or volumes, possible due to administrator rights. As understand it, Wine should grant full Admin rights, so this may have something to do with Wine privileges. (see screenshot below) I am so new to this, I really don't have a clue.

I ran 'winecfg' and autodetected the drive and partitions but the windows .exe can't access them.
What should I do?

What OS do you use? There is a bug in Ubuntu 12.10 that renders the user unable to do administrative tasks on the hard-drives atm.

Thanks for the reply Shahrizai. I'm using Linux 3.5.6-pmagic (i686) as seen on System Information. It's the Latest_Live Parted Magic ISO that Unetbootin downloaded. Perhaps a different Live flavor would work, though at this point I'm wondering if it is worth it since all I wanted to do was check that my AF Drive was properly aligned. I discovered I can figure this out manually using the command:

sudo fdisk -lu

I've been able to see the start sector of each partition and since they are all divisible by 8, the AF drive is properly aligned. I guess I don't really need to use the "Disk Alignment Test" windows program since I can just figure it out manually.
I tested other windows executables and they seem to work fine and can access the drive. On that software's website it says the program must run as administrator, which leads me to believe that it is something unique to that program and Wine and Admin rights.

Hi,

afaik Parted Magic uses a very much stripped down distribution. You could try your disk utility with e.g. Ubuntu 12.04 or opensuse 12.2, get latest wine, run it from command line and post terminal output.

In general the use of Windows disk utilities under wine is not recommended. It may be ok, if the utility just shows info, I'd be very careful about things like creating/changing partitions, formatting etc. Anything else like defragmenting is absolutely not recommended, I wouldn't even do things like benchmarking ssds under wine. If you absolutely need your utility, it may be better to create a BootCD with e.g. Windows XP on it and run your utility from there.

The Windows application 'Disk Alignment Test.exe' is just an information utility that displays a nice GUI representing the newer and larger sized Advanced Format 4,096-byte sectors vs the older smaller sized 512-byte sectors so that user can confirm that their new AF disk has it's partitions correctly aligned. For any partition management or adjustment I will definitely use Partition Editor contained in the Parted Magic Distro.

I stumbled into Linux through Parted Magic because I can't recover/reinstall my old OS onto a new AF drive due to the Windows installer not liking the Advanced Format. Now that I am here I am surprised and starting to get used to the feel of Linux. I am intrigued!
