Petition ArenaNet to Consider Development Alongside The Wine

Post by gralco »

I am sure that you are all aware that ArenaNet has partnered with TransGaming to "bring" Guild Wars 2 to OS X. But what practically all users who will be playing Guild Wars 2 on their Apple machines won't realize, as history shows us, is the fact that this "release" would not have been possible without the efforts of the Wine project, and that they are, indirectly, using Wine software to play this game.

Ipso facto many believe that ArenaNet should have chosen to develop along side the Wine project, and had they made this decision, any platform capable of running Wine would in turn be able to run Guild Wars 2, not just OS X.

If you agree with what has been stated, and would like to help a cause make this happen before it is too late, please sign THIS ONLINE PETITION.

Also, spread the word so we may see change sooner.

Good luck... its a nice concept, but there is no way they'd ever go for that. They went with Transgaming because its quick and easy... they don't want to hire people for in-house development... they wanted to outsource it. Also on the Mac, Cider doesn't have X11 limitations Wine does and usually has MUCH higher performance than Wine. All they'd get going with Wine would be making some Linux users happy, which you know they won't care about at all.

Hello Gracie
right you are.But i think Areanet will not develop for use a GW2 linux solution .
Perhaps we can find an other way, Shall we (as Linux GW2 Users) collect money to make a contract to a wine experience programmer ?
i dont now how expensive this idea are will bee,if this a possible way to go.
for a start is is my idea ...

I do not think the answer for us is money, we don't have that much (a solid programmer + workplace etc is thousands of dollars/euros per month), and frankly, it's the job of the game developers to fix it. If we want to do this right, first we should make sure X11 is as compatible with weird stuff like DirectX , and then make sure there is 1 Linux to support :P That's not going to happen, but hey.
Considering that Arenanet is getting things to work on Mac (which is very very close to Linux, but with a totally different graphical shell) we should be able to fix it for any Linux as well. The thing is just fixing stubs and other oddities that have not yet been prioritized. So do support bugreports here, try different things (settings), and report how things are working. ArenaNet has done its job, it's devtime for us now :P Looking at what our Wine-devvers have done so far, I'm confident it will be getting even better soon.

In the past I would agree with you that there is no drive for a company like this to ever go out of their way to dev for the Linux community. My hope, is that with Windows 8 throwing their new look-n-feel down people's throats that a lot of on-the-fence people (such as myself) will decide to go for the gold and stick with their co-boot linux partition they have on their box in support of Steam's new native linux client they are working on. I know they have tried things like this in the past but we just might have enough people to get to a critical mass with Steam behind us and the popularity of Ubuntu. With those two titles teaming together, it just might make enough people be able to head to Linux. Gaming companies will naturally follow the money, and if that is where they end up, then that is what will happen.

I'm a lifetime Windows user that dabbled in linux since highschool but could never make the move permanent because there was no support from the industry and the Linux community was not very noob friendly. This seems to be changing with the amazing amount of force that Ubuntu has placed behind its name. There is such a huge community out there willing to help that it has made the move WAY more doable than what has ever been available in the past. I have recently made the move permanent and deleted my Windows partition, with much pain, but nonetheless I am now fully Linux (Ubuntu if you couldn't tell).

I don't know for sure, but I think we might just have enough momentum to actually do something this time. If not, then so be it, but if so then I'm game!

Signed! I agree with everything said in OP :)

I also agree with Tobeus, Linux is gaining momentum faster and faster now, like a rolling snowball. If GW2 support came to Linux alongside native Steam ... then I believe there are thousands of Windows-partitions that will be deleted over the night :)

Why does this only have 95 supporters? Wouldn't anyone support it?
Is there a reason for not supporting it?
